For a new hide in my BP's new cage i built for him, i took a plastic tupperware tub and cut an entrance in it and glued fake moss and such to the outside so it looks like its in the rainforest kinda, and i was woundering if i'd be able to put peat moss in the tub for a substract?I've heard its good for humidity, and its really cheap!(always good)

That would be a good idea. Just be careful that you dont keep it TOO moist or it will mold and then you will start a whole new set of problems.

There are certain types of moss that can actually be toxic to your snake. Sphagnum moss is good to use. I have that in all my enclosures for the bci and Royals.

I read somewhere that peat moss is just a cheaper version of sphagnum moss, so i'll try it out and hopefully it will work out good

I dunno, would moss be difficult to maintain as a substrate? BPs are not really rainforest snakes are they? More like wooded grassland and savanna. Do they need that much humidity?

I seriously would not do the moss. BPs don't need the humidity. too much humidity could lead to skin blisters and possible RI. BPs ar not tropical snakes more of an arid climate. Better re read the care sheets on them.

The area they come from isn't all that dry, either. Without humidity, they will have problem sheds. The moss is not used as a substrate. I set it in a couple of corners and mist it well to add to the humidity. I personally wouldn't use it in the hide because of the possible skin problems, but it is good to have the added moisture in the air. In 2.5 years, my male Royal has yet to have any skin problems or bad sheds using this method.

I agree with Ed and Michelle. I don't think it's a good idea to put the moss in the hide. Could also result in your pythong "abusing" it.
