well i don't know much but i know that anything that gives off heat will burn the animal.. Put down a layer of screen to keep him from getting intouch with the heat source.. im guessing the screen would get hott, but not nearly as hot as the heat source..

Check out Big Apple Herp ... they have some nice radiant heat panels for a decent price. Copied from the site, text on the Desert Rays Heat Panel:

Beyond a heating revolution... this is breakthrough heating technology for your reptile. There has never been a heating source that so closely mimics the sun’s infrared long wave heat. It’s simply the perfect heat source for your reptile. Our radiant heat panels incorporate the highest grade copper elements available to produce incredible reliability, superior accuracy and totally even heat distribution.

Desert Rays Radiant Heat Panels are designed to be mounted on the interior wall or ceiling of your terrarium putting heat exactly where you want it. Thus, reptiles can get close to the mat to obtain optimum levels of infrared heat without the concern of burns. The panels produce a high level of heat but never reach temperatures hot enough to burn on contact. Desert Rays panels are extremely energy efficient and will enable you to create the ultimate natural basking environment.

Hope that helps!!

Thanx for the help guys, i think i might try one of those out. If it dont work out for some reason, would i be ok hangin a heat lamp from the top if its about 2 or 3 ft from the bottom of the cage? or should i just cut out a right sized circle on the top and bolt a screen on and but the lamp on that? what would you guys do?

I would cut out a hole and bolt on a screen. Putting a heat lamp or CHE inside the enclosure is just asking for problems (if it isn't screened off inside). The heat panel should work just fine, tho. We plan on getting them when we start building our own enclosures....they heat well and take up much less energy to use. In California, it's VERY important to conserve energy (cuz it costs too darn much!!) Good luck.
