This is something that is puzzling me quite a bit.
I stripped my #40size glass breeder viv 2 weeks ago and noticed that there were multiple cracks in the floor of my tank. I have an undercage heating strip meant for heating reptile cages and it seems the heat from the strip was too hot for the glass? Would i be correct in saying this or is there something else wrong with the problem?
I thought perhaps there may have been a fault with the output heat of the mat but i guess they would be tested for that sort of thing.

well, it most likely was,
the breeder tanks have much thinner glass than a standard aquarium,
its sometimes a good idea to lift the tanks up a 1/4" or so so air can get under to help ventilate and keep the heat buildup from becoming too extreme.
but be careful with those heat pads, some of them dont work all that well, and short out easily.

It could be cracked from the combination of heat and water.
The humidity may be too high or if there is a lot of water in the viv,
especially cold water that can crack glass. Much like streets that
have holes is caused from freezing water and it expanding. Or
I could be a dumbass and this post could be totally worthless.

Another way that water can do this is when a snake or otyher critter spills the water bowl on top of the UTH.
Also, not unplugging it and letting it cool prior to cleaning is a big reason.
May as well get a new tank, cause I wouln't trust this one with any animal in it.

I see what you are all saying. It could be any of these reasons but like eddie says.. "may as well get a new tank". Great!! Why me? It sure does make ya think twice about getting a glass one again.

Ok, I guess i should have mentioned this at the start. The tank is sitting on the floor... Between the tank and the carpet is a foam board the exact size of the viv base. The reason i did this was to deny the coldness of the slab to have any effect on the glass of the viv. I knew this would work due to my experience with polystyrene.
Is this where i hold out my arm, shut my eyes tightly and expect a whopping great cane across my sensitive hand?

How big is the glass on the bottom? Could you not get a piece of tempered glass and replace it? Just a thought....

I supose i could replace it. Thing is, what is the chance of it happening again? Or is tempered glass resistant to extreme heat like this?

That may be a PITA!!!
And it really doesn't matter too much what type of glass.
The thing with glass is rapid expansion and contractions.
In other words, don't heat too quickly and don't cool too quickly.
Let it cool with out any water .

Yup, tempered glass can withstand more distress than regular glass. Heat, pressure, whatever.....
