Minimizing heat loss for large boa enclosure
I need to build a bigger home for my boa but I am worried about keeping it warm enough. I live in a very cold, dry climate (it gets down to -40 F sometimes in the winter here.) His current tank is made from 1/4 inch glass and it is very heavy, but it stays warm enough with the use of just 1 100 watt reptile bulb. I have a second lamp too that I turn on at night during the winter, and the back side of the tank as well as the bottom are insulated with 1 inch of excersize mat foam. I would like to build a taller tank with a bigger base but am afraid that his warm hide won't stay warm enough if I change the distance between the basking lamp and the floor of the tank.
My snake is currently about 5 1/2 feet, and he's definitely growing.
How big of a tank would you suggest for a snake 6 to 8 feet? I want to plan for the future. Also, what would make the best material for a lighter, easier to move tank? The current enclosure is too heavy for me to move alone, and that has produced problems. I try not to move him often, but I unfortunately have a "seasonally" transient lifestyle, so I move summer and winter according to work, and the tank is becoming a pain. I also definitely need to avoid too much heat loss. And I would like to be able to create more humidity, it is a little low right now in the dry winter.
