Question about flexxwatt ??
maybe i have too many papertowels on there, but has anyone else noticed, if you have yours on a dimmer and use a glass aquarium, that you have to almost have it on full blast to get the surface temp 90's? i've gotten it up to about 87 still going, i got a hide in there and i'm judging the temperature of the hide, as that is where he will be spending most of his time.

I have an undertank heater on mine and if I turn it up full blast it's about 120 surface temperature. I have to run mine on extra, extra low to even get close to 90. It's normally at around 92 at the hottest point.

yeah you're testing the surface temp of the flex itself, i'm going on surface temperature inside the cage, it's a glass aquarium, ontop of the papertowels is what i'm measuring, which is where he is, isn't that what needs to be 90's? where he's laying?

I've been wondering, with the ExoTerra heat tape pads, do you have to use a dimmer/thermostat?
Depending on the wattage and size of the pad, the temps are different I've noticed. The large one(11"x17") has about 23 watts I think and gets much warmer than the small (8"x8").. don't remember the wattage for that though.
I know it gets pretty warm using newspaper as there is hardly much thickness, but using the repticarpet the temps are pretty much perfect.
I'm just a little bit concerned as I've never used a thermostat or anything for any of my undertank heaters, and all I've ever used is the ExoTerra brand, but I've never had any problems with any of my snakes getting burned or anything when they lay on the warm side.

The flexwatt and under tank heaters are the same as having floor heat in ur house, they are only ment to heat the floor not the air, to heat the air u will need a heat lamp or heat emitter.

well I beg to differ.... in a good cage the heat will radiate upwards and warm the entire enclosure.... also for some snakes they spend all their time on the floor anyways

I agree i use flexxwatt in my cages and all but the bottom one the temps are held just right with my flexwatt. The one on the bottom i use a che because it stays to cold being located so close to the floor.

get some heat reflective tape and use it to attach it to the glass something like the one at the bottom of this page http://www.beanfarm.com/cgi-bin/stor...off&ppinc=heat
