probe placement

i have my bci in a 40g breeder and was wondering if i should take the temp directly on the surface of the cage that has the heat tape attached to it or is it the temp inside the hide or the ambient in that area? in another words, where do i place the probe of a thermometer?

I put it at the heat source and have a hide on the heat source also.

measue on the surface ( glass?) because the flex can get REALLY hot. I thought I had bad flex because the surface was Lukewarm at best ( on full power no restrictions) on my PVC cage, I stuck the probe the the floor and measured... 126 degrees. If possible run one on the floor and in the hide to get an idea, if needed thin your substate a lil in the hide.
