I am looking to build a new tank and I'm thinking of many different design plans. But, I'm curious to know if I should make the tank tall over being long. I know that it should be at least 3/4 the size of the snake but can that be tall or long???

Jack, for starters, you may want to tell us what kind of species you're building this cage for.

There are a lot of rules out there, but yes, 3/4 the length and 1/2 the depth. But also, consider, what kind of snake do you plan on housing. That is also a major decision factor. Some boas do well in a 20L their entire life. Arboreals like to climb, others species like to burrow. Some are afraid of wide open spaces, etc. Keep in mind also, if you're building it tall, make sure you can clean it well. If your snake decides to drag poo all over the place, you need to be able to clean your cage well.

Oh, Welcome to RTB!

(Take that, John! )

Ah yes, the breed - I have a Columbian Red-Tail. The enclosure would be reachable for cleaning as well.

Jack, while I've only my first RTB (at the moment) I would tend to recommend long as opposed to tall. But then again, who am I to talk. I'm thinking of building a HUGE cage for him.

You going to the White Plains Reptile Expo this sunday?

BTW, try this link to another post in this forum. It has a couple more links with ideas and designs and pics. Good luck. Provide pics when you can! Always love to see new cages and designs.

Thanks for the reminder about the expo! I almost forgot! Also, thank for you those links, I've seen them before but didn't really look at them. There are some good ideas there.

For a Rtb, I would definately go long. Being that they are not aboreal (sp?), they do not need climbing space like a tree python or boa would. The one that I want to get is 4hx3wx6L...So as long as yours has plenty of hides, and room to stretch, you're doing good.
