I want to build a enclosure from plywood.
I want to build a enclosure from plywood, for my boa, and was wondering if he absolutely needed substrate for the bottom, or if I could put tiles on the bottom, as they'd be easier to clean, and will absorb heat...
also what can I treat the wood with? and when I treat the wood, can I paint over it? or paint than treat?
how do I do the lightage and heatage in the enclosure?
does it matter if its this many feet by this many? (IE: instead of it being 4*2 can I have it, 3*3) and how high should I make it? (I'd like to eventually add a few to stack to them.)
do I add as many cages on top, and than complete it in one turn, or can I add more as time goes by?

actually a 3x3 cage has more square feet than a 4x2 cage. it will probably be little difficult to get into a 3 foot wide cage and get your snake tho. Im not really sure about the tiles or treatin wood

2x4 would be 8 sq.ft 3x3 would be 9 sq.ft. the depth in question could be a bit of a problem. As with stacking, it depends on the height and the thickness of the ply in question. Too thin it will sag with added weight, But your height should be species dependant as well. Tileing the bottom I see as no problem and can help with the fact Ply likes to drink fluids even if sealed (I have never had ply not take in alot of liquid) . Setting up power, thats a tricky part if you want to make it look professional and in code, or a quick job. But it also depends on the choice of lighting and heat you want

Might want to check out Tom's plans, which I believe he sells on his website. He has some great plans for oak plywood enclosures, if thats the route you want to take. A big problem with plywood enclosures, is weight. Once you get the desired dimensions for your plywood enclosure, it tends to weigh quite a bit.

You can seal the wood every effectively with a 2-3 coats of water-based polyurethane. It dries very quickly and will seal the wood very well. I'd also seal it with silicon caulk and let it dry and vent for several days before use.

Re: I want to build a enclosure from plywood.
check out my post about the cage i am building under boas.
i used 2x4's finished cabinet grade plywood and vinal flooring tiles.
put your frame together i put the plywood on the inside, and the tiles on the plywood sides, floor, front, and back then used a clear calk to waterproof all the cracks. you will still need a substrate, people who use paper towels or tiles its difficult for the snake to move on smooth surfaces there is no resistance so to speak. its like a dog running on hardwood floor or vinyl floor and its wet they just slide and fall same concept i use a cocunut fiber beding for all my animals. its called eco earth
