Water Feature
In planning/designing a new home for my BP, thought I would add a water feature such as a waterfall of some kind to help keep up the humidity for him. Of course it would look very cool - but am now thinking it might be unpractical. If I built it in then it couldn't be removed for cleaning. If it is freestanding than he could potentially knock it over. Anybody use anything like this in their enclosures? Any advice/suggestions?

For a snake, I don't think it would be practical. If it decided to soak in the waterfall and caused it to overflow, you could end up with a big mess. Plus, waterfalls are a good breeding ground for bacteria, and it takes a lot of work to keep them clean. I tried making one for a frog tank once, and it just ended up being a rean pain in the butt.

I used to use the Exo Terra medium waterfall with my juvie carpets. Never had a problem with it. The pump comes separately and as it is a sealed unit, it cannot be tampered with by a snake. The only thing I was concerned about was the water piping and if I took it apart for cleaning, I would close off the tubing with a little blu-tak. Mind you, the tubing would only be a problem for a real juvie carpet or maccie.
There is a little cover over the main water reservior, which snakes could shift if they really wanted to, however, mine never really went near it, they didn't drink from it, just hid behind it. The water reservoir doesn't hold much however, so I wouldn't recommend running it all the time. I used to turn mine on when it was hot, or I had visitors or when I was spending time in the room with them.
With a couple of silk plants and the waterfall running, it looked a real treat and as the whole thing is easily picked up and placed in the bath for cleaning, no bacteria worries.
I now use it for my Frog as I felt he required it more than my snakes.

In the link I posted up there ^, you will notice they mention a fogger for the waterfall unit as well. I don't recommend it. Stick your finger over a fogger disc and see how quickly you get burnt.

Thanks! I have a wonderful book for building different kinds of waterfalls - will check into it further and design one I think would work well. As Wrasse said - I wasn't planning to run mine 24/7 - so this might be able to work out if I can design the right kind. And, yes, when all is said and done (probably a few months from now) will be sure to post pics of the habitat.

momakat, what is the title to the book? I would like to see if I can find it at a bookstore. I am always trying to keep busy doing something and building a waterfall sounds like it would be fun. I am going to be building a pond in my front yard this spring and a waterfall would make a beautiful addition.

farmergirl - so sorry I didn't get back to you sooner - don't look all over at times cuz have been really busy. Anyway - the book is "Tranquility Fountains", Projects for a Serene Lifestyle by Mickey Baskett. It is geared for tabletop fountains but am sure the same concepts could be applied to somethings on a larger scale. I got it from a craft book club - but am sure you should be able to find it or something like it somewhere. Hope this helps.
