cheap JCP cage
My cousin gave me an 80 gallon tank a while back, for free- even delivered it for me. It's an odd size, so I couldn't decide what I wanted to put in it. It's 6 feet long but only 1 foot wide- not really enough room for my female boa, as it's too narrow. Well, the other night, a friend of mine called up and asked if I wanted the JCP I sold him last year. He said he just didn't have much time to handle her anymore, and he was willing to give her back to me, no charge, along with the rest of the bag of fuzzy rats he's been feeding her. So, I spent my day off today setting up a cage. Ended up at two different hardware stores, a total of four visits, but finally got it all ready. $10-12 for PVC pipe and fittings, another $10 for stuff to make screen tops, and $5 for turnbuttons to keep the screens on. Already had plexi, screen, and plants. The tank has two braces across the top, so I made three lids- two screen and one piece of plexi to help hold in humidity. I also made two PVC pipe jungle gyms, one on each end of the cage. I had to scrub down the tank because it had been sitting outside, but it's in decent shape- a chip on one corner and a small crack on the opposite side, but nothing a little silicone didn't take care of. So here's the finished product. Not bad for spending a total of no more than $30!

jcp? jungle carpet python? ah well, anyways... im still looking around for a good cage to keep my rtb in for the remainder of it's life and i emailed boaphileplastics.com to see what cage they would reccomend. they said a 421d would be good and it's dimensions are 48 x 24 x 11.5 ....4 ft long, 2 ft deep, and 11.5 in high...is that good enough? they seem to think so, but the 48 x 24 x 17.5 is over $300, which i can't afford at this time. the 421d is $199, not bad. so would this be enough room for my baby? after all he is a he so i dont suspect he'll get over 5 ft, though i cant count on it and he is a pretty slender snake, not too thick. what dimensions do u think is appropiate?

Isn't the 421d the same dimensions? Don't count on your male staying under 5 feet. I have a 7 foot male and a 6 foot male. I built cages that are6X2X1, and I still feel like they're a little cramped. It's adequate, but I wish I could give them more room to move around.

It will be ok for now, but you never know how big your snake will get. So if you are wanting something that will definately be big enough for the rest of the snakes life, I suggest going with something bigger.

but my snakes only 3 ft now (he's a year old) so id have some time to upgrade from now and when he's full grown, right? im just on a tight budget and i just want the best for my baby, and that means i dare not try to build one by myself.

Yes it would work fine for now, and probably well into the future. It may work forever. But like was said before, you never know how big your snake will get. He may become a huge, or he may not grow over 6 ft. If you do go with that size, be sure and put a lot of hides, fake plants and such to take up space until he grow a litlle bigger.
