What kind of "temp thingy" are you using? If it's not digital, it's probably not very accurate. Use a digital indoor/outdoor thermometer or a temp gun to measue the temp directly under or over the heat source. You'd be surprised how much temps can range. A stick-on thermometer on the wall is going to read a lot lower than the actual temp at the basking spot.

If you don't already have a digital, you can get a digital thermometer/hydrometer at Wal-Mart for $15.

stick-ons are innacurate and are of no use whatsoever. I don't think I ever saw an rtb basking on the wall lol. Yeah, the digitals are great. I can only find them for 21 dollars but that might be due to the lack of wal-marts in NY. Temp guns are also a good idea. You can probably pick one up at a reptile show or you can order it from proexotics.com (the pe-1)

Yes, probably so. I see that you have a few snakes is your sig. I suggest that you buy one for every cage, or buy a temp gun.

Like cc said, You can get an Accurite digital thermometer/hydrometer with outdoor probe for $15 @ wal-mart in the gardening section. Just place the main unit on the floor of the cool side and run your probe to the warm side on the substrate. This will allow you to measure everything at a glance accurately.

tempguns are 25$ but have no humidity. They are really useful because you can accurately find the temp of any specific spot in the snake's enclosure. When combined with a digital thermometer/hygrometer it is very easy to keep your snakes at the desired temps and humidity.

If you buy the digital thermometer/hydrometer be sure to run the cable(that connects the probe to the unit) under the substrate.

I use a human type of heating pad kept on low 24/7. The enclosure is elavated 1/4 inch. I keep my snake room at 80f with a oil filled radiator. The temps stay perfect without any additional heat source.

Yes, you need a heating pad(undertank heater) for all snakes. They need belly heat to help in digestion. I also leave mine on 24/7. It doesn't hurt anything as long as your temps are as they should be. You can use human heating pads, flexwatt tape, or the uth designed for herp cages.
