Anchoring Thermostat Probes
I use Big Apple Herp Thermostats in most of my cages. I mount the unit to the side of the cage, drill a hole in the side of the cage a couple inches off the floor just big enough for the probe and I just leave the probe loose on the floor of the cage under the heat panel. This has always worked fine. Yesterday I almost lost my Retic because of this.I went to check on everybody and noticed the Retic's cage was messed up, her water bowl was bone dry and she was acting kinda wierd. I opened the door and could feel that it was way too hot in there. She was really really warm to the touch. I turned off the heat and cracked open the doors to cool it off in there. I found the thermostat probe wrapped up in a wad of newspaper off to the side of the panel. Because of its location and being wrapped in paper, it wasn't reading the temps correctly which resulted in the thermostat cranking up the heat panel. To keep this from happening again, I cut a notch in the base of her hide box that the probe snaps into, keeping it under the panel. I filled up her water bowl and when I came back to check on her a couple hours later it was half empty, or half full, however you want to look at it. I gave her the pinch test ( I always enjoy pinching a cranky 12ft retic that has tagged me good twice) to check for dehydration and she looked ok. Long story short, if you're using a thermostat, make sure it will always be reading the correct temps.
