Ok, I have this Major itch to start my breeding projects, the only thing is, the soonest anything would be ready would be about 1.5 years down the road and the wait is Killing me! I was wondering if anyone out there could reccomend a simple snake that wouldn't be too expensive, so I could buy an adult pair for not too bad of a price and start breeding to get experienced for when my other projects mature. Any suggestions? I was thinking of just purchasing an adult corn pair or something like that...just anything so I can get started down the road to breeding my other things. Thanks

All depends ya know.. What are your interests even...live bearers or egg layers even. What are your future projects involving even also ? What do you have available for space to do such ? Do you have incubator, rack system of sorts and all that available yet ? There's a lot to consider ya know when deciding exactly what you want to play around with in breeding atm....

Well in the future I would like to have 3 pairs of GTP's for breeding (already have 1 pair), and want to breed my Dumeril too (waiting for a female from Juggalo *crosses fingers*). So I will be doing both live and egg laying in the future. At my own house I don't have an incubator yet (mainly because I really haven't been looking for info yet) but do have one available for use at a friends place. As far as space is concerned, once the new house is built, I'm getting my own 20 x 20 foot room for my reptiles so I should have plenty of space. As far as general snake specs go, I'd like to stay under 10'. When I first started collecting I set that as my personal limit, besides I think 6' is the legal limit currently around these parts. Does that help any?

Nope, no way would I do ball pythons. I can't put up with the feeding issues. Somehow I lucked out with the one my brother has that will eat at any time but I've dealt with too many of them to put up with it. Thanks though

I think that bci would really not be all that expensive in the big picture. If you get a couple of normals you can ususally pick them up for around $100 if you shop around. Most don't get any more than 8-10 feet.
If you want something that is easy and pretty fast, leo's turn eggs pretty fast and you should be able to get a breeding pair fairly cheap.
I don't really think that price alone should be a factor. You have to remember that breeding any animal will almost certainly turn into a full time job. You really need to find something that you love. When I say love, I mean something that you have a true passion for. You will need it to stay focused on and interested in what you are doing.
Just my $.02 worth.
Good luck!

I"ve currently got 3 ball pythons and i've never had feeding problems with mine. I've had about 20 ball pythons go threw my possesion in my day and SEVERAL babies, and i've only had ONE time when i had to wait a week more to feed it cause of the humidity. And that was my first snake i've owned so i dont think that really counts hehe, but i'd suggest to go with the ball pythons, they are GRRRRRRRRREEEEEAAAATTT!\

Get a girlfriend.
Nah, too high maintenence...
Boas can be had fairly cheap at most reptile shows, either BCI, BCC, BCO, ammies and such.
There are a lot of other breeds to consider as well, but are you looking at the longterm as becoming a well known breeder or looking at it in the hobiest sense?
I think you need to figure out what you want FIRST, then decide which species you want to work with.

Hmm, good point Trinity...I didn't really consider the interest level. I guess I got more caught up in the fact that I want to breed something for the experience of breeding and taking care of babies. What would be ideal is if I could just have an adult pair of GTP's to start breeding, but A. I figured I'd go with something a little easier and B. An adult pair would be rather expensive at this moment.
I dunno, I guess I was just hoping there would be some simple solution that I could just get a pair of something rather common or simple and breed for the experience of breeding so I can learn hands on so that once my main projects come around I'll have worked out all the mistakes. Man...I wish I didn't have to wait so long for my snakes to get old enough.

Eddie...
When I get to the point of breeding the GTP's, I think I'm going to be trying to become 'well known' but at the current time I'd be breeding as a hobyist. Now that last part, what did you mean? Figure out what I want...want what? Did you mean figure out what I want to be breeder wise before I get the snakes, or what?
I do want to be a long term breeder, once I get my GTP's old enough thats going to be my main species, but for now I just want to learn hands on more than anything else.
Am I making any sense?
