I'm thinking of starting a breeding project and I'm wondering about the effects of inbreeding. I got my copy of "The Reproductive Husbandry of Pythons and Boas" and the author seems to come down squarely against any kind of inbreeding. However, I've had other respectable breeders indicate that they inbreed all the time and have no problems with it. How much do I have to worry about inbreeding? Is the worry greater if I'm working with color or pattern morphs? Do I need to outbreed from time to time to keep the line healthy? Any info you have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Carl

The breeders that are saying they dont have problems with it are 2 fold. yes inbreeding even happens in the wild. And 2 the breeders usually don't see the babies after they are sold to reply intellegently to that point. once they are sold it's C YA Later. I believe there can be eventually some behaviors problems, agressiveness. And also being genetically weak. Sounds bad but its the same with humans. Yeah it's done but the results are often not favorable. I won't get a male and female from the same litter or same blood line. But thats me.

Good questions!
Well considering that morphs do have many problems, such as a shorter lifespan and lowered resistance to most diseases and ailments, then yes, there are probs with inbreeding.
Inbreeding leads to may different physical traits, the most desireable, being morphs, for those selling for big $$$.
Other physical attributes can be a lack of one or both eyes and many other deformaties, all not natural, although it does happen from time to time in the wild.
Thing is, even in the wild, they don't last long at all, either due to not being able to hunt, see, avoid predators etc.

because of the importation laws dumeril boas are constanty inbreed causing cronic RI, short life spans, missing eyes...blah, blah, blah. yes, there are some side effects, the more inbreed, the more serious, say if you take 1.1 from a clutch with unrelated parents and breed them, there babies will probably come out fine, with no porblems. however, if you take 1.1 out of that clutch, breed them, and on and on. sooner or later you will come out with a very weak clutch missing eyes, and living short lifes. <TABLE BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=85%><TR><TD><font class="pn-sub">Quote:</font><HR></TD></TR><TR><TD><FONT class="pn-sub"><BLOCKQUOTE> Ever seen 'Deliverance'? </BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE> the severly inbreed snakes play banjos -Juggalo
