Okay...I hope this doesn't come across as a dumb question...but I am going to ask. In about two years we hope to breed our brazillian rainbows (they are both youngsters). So here is my question...do any of you have contracts with your snakes? ....let me explain...I have trained showed dogs and it is very common to get a contract with a breeder that pretty much states something like the breeder has the right to take back the animal if the animal is mistreated not taken care of etc. Or...if the buyer has to get rid of the animal the contract usually states that the breeder will take the animal back or assist in finding a proper home. I know this may be a silly question since you are dealing with MANY baby snakes but does anyone out there do this....or do you all just find homes and that is the end of it? I am just curious. Thanks in advance.

Hiya Dizzy! Welcome to RTB!!!

YES, some people do draw up contracts saying that if the buyer can no longer house the animal, the breeder gets first crack at buying it back. I don't know about the ability to take it back if you found it was mistreated/neglected...although many here would back you up if you felt the need to do so, providing you had proof. I have a story relating to this, but I'm not a breeder. I was supposed to just babysit the snakes, but when they got here, I noticed that the big girl was very ill and the 4 lil ones were about to follow her slither trail....so I got them all better and refused to give them back. Needless to say he wasn't happy, but he didn't learn his lesson. He went right out and bought 2 baby Royal pythons. I guess he'll learn when they get sick and die...or maybe not. Sad All I can say it to be careful of who you sell to and make sure they know what they need to know, ya know? Some people keep them just to say they do and can look 'cool'. Try to stay away from those types if you can.

Good luck in your future breeding endeavors.

Well, you could always try to sell them to the people here, that way you know that they are in good hands... but other than that... I find that by talking to the buyer, you can usualy pick up on how serious they are about both the snake and husbandry...
You don't HAVE to sell them to anyone... just take your time before "giving" them away...

I do not usually do contracts....
actually I have never done a contract.....
I just let them know that if they ever want to just give it away...my doors are always open.

When you start selling lots of snakes.....a contract would probably not be feesable.
