Meet Bella
Last week I lost my 6' male BCI(RIP Damien ) and had the urge to get another to go with Tess. So now she has a new friend.
We also picked up a baby beardie for our son too.

I have to ask though. by "go with Tess" you don't mean same cage do you?

Re: Meet Bella
They both will be in the same tank in a few days. Both are females and the same size.

Re: Meet Bella
that's not the best idea to do. you don't know if the newbie has any kind of disease or internal or external parasites. you should actually quarantine any new animal in a different room for at least a few months.

Re: Meet Bella
I actually know the person I got her from. A good exotic reptile breeder and seller. He has a great store. I have bought from before and he is local to me. He won't sell any snake unless they are 100% healthy. I wanted a blood Python, but she had a cold and was not for sale. I trust him and if anything bad happens, then I learned my lesson

Re: Meet Bella
I have 2 Bolivian boas coming in from one of the best Bolivian breeders there is, but those 2 will be away from everyone else for a while. just proper precautions...

Re: Meet Bella
yea sakara is right it would be best to quarantine the new snake.
when i get new herps i typically take them to the vet as well just as another precaution.
also its not the best idea to house snakes together unless your breeding them.

Re: Meet Bella
Snakes are solitary by nature - they don't require companionship or friends. Two snakes = two cages. In my case, I have 150+ snakes = 150+ enclosures. The only time two of my snakes meet is for breeding

If your new boa was in the same house as the sick blood python then there is a chance the boa could be sick too. If she is sick and you put her in the same enclosure with your other snake the other snake could get sick too.
There are no advantages to keeping more than one snake per enclosure if they're not breeding.

I didn't think of that being the Blood was in a different room by itself from the rest.

Re: Meet Bella
Can anyone expand on why it is not a good idea to have two females together? I would like info on it for myself. I understand the quarantine at first due to mites, and stuff, but why permanently.

Re: Meet Bella
because they are solitary animals. they don't enjoy having other snakes around and they will compete for hides, warm spots, etc... the "cuddling" that you may see isn't an affectionate act, it's competition. the 2 snakes can stress each other out. even breeding snakes can stress each other put, which is why it's always important to keep an eye on them.

I don't own the snakes so they can cuddle with each other. I own dogs and cats for that.

Re: Meet Bella
because they can hurt each other through competition.
they can carry diseases like ibd that you may not know about for a good while until both your snakes pop up dead.
snakes dont like being around each other.
and not to mention it would be cheaper to buy to appropriate size cages for them then to get a cage large enough to house both the snakes.

lol that's not what I meant... what I meant is that them curled around each other that some ppl consider to be cuddling and that they like each other isn true. snakes don't cuddle, they compete...
personal example... when I had a male in with my big female he would stay on her all the time breeding. which that's fine... but after she denied him he still wanted to bask. she pretty much shunned him to the other side of the cage and unless she moved from the basking area, which was rarely to never, he never got to be on the warm spot. obviously after he was denied for a little while and we were sure she took, he got put back in his own cage...
it's just not worth the risk and stress to the animals

Re: Meet Bella
Thanks for the info as that has helped. That is what I am looking for. I may modify this one I currently have being it is big enough and I can make it into 2 seperate enclosures.
I do plan on getting more Boamaster cages in a few months as i have a BP that is getting big.

Re: Meet Bella
also... do you know why your male boa died? if not I wouldn't web have the new snake in the same room for quite some time with the other snake. just because if you dint know why he died, you don't know if he may have had a contagious disease or something that could be harmful.

Yes, and it wasn't illness related. I also thoroughly cleaned the enclosure with bleach and water, and with Mr clean, and rinsed it 3 more times with water and let it sit (airing out)for a week.
