Re: New guy
the weight looks fine... she looks young... under a year and a half I'd say, unless she was underfed... A cute little Colombian BCI

Re: New guy
From what I understand Pine and cedar are deadly for snakes. I could be mistaken but that is what I've read and heard. I use Aspen, cypress, coconut bedding, or newspaper/ papertowels.

Re: New guy
Cedar is toxic to snakes and i hear the oils from pine are dangerous to but i used pine shavings for 5 years and didn't have a problem but i use news paper now.

Pine and Cedar are deadly to your snake. Get it out of there, remove the bedding and thoroughly wash the tank with a mild detergent like Dawn dish soap. pine has oils that Dawn will cut through. Pet shops will have Aspen or Cypress. I use Cypress.

To answer your questions, Colombian boa and redtail boa are two general terms given to "normal" BCIs (Boa constrictor imperator.) You will never know the exact locality yours is unless you find the original breeder/importer but Colombian is generally accepted as the most common. If you want to be as correct as you can be, you would just say you have a boa constrictor. A "true redtail" would be a Boa constrictor constrictor, which would be Guyanan, Suriname, Brazilian, and a few others. Yours also looks like it could be a BCC BCI cross. And as far as size goes, it will probably max out between 7 and 8 feet if it is a female, slightly less if male. That being said, some do get bigger and some stay smaller, and especially not knowing the lineage, you really won't know for sure. Pretty much everything you'll need to know can be found on this site, just use the search feature and read and read and read some more. And welcome!

Re: New guy
oh yea, get him off the pine and on to some aspen... And since it hasn't been said already, pre killed or frozen thawed rats of appropriate size are gonna be best for the little guy

Re: New guy
As to how big they can get, if she is a female she can get to be anywhere from 6'-12'. I believe 7'-8' is most common and anything over 10' is quite rare. Can anybody else confirm this?
