My younger ones - so used to f/t - don't know what to do when given live pups. They eat them while they're still kickin', lol.

Raising your own rats it sooo worth it! I save so much money every year. I think I spend about $250 to care for 7 pairs of breeders plus their offspring. I don't need any smalls through larges ever, I just buy jumbos and rabbits.
BL - what's the last pastel? is that an Inferno? She's amazing looking. If you don't have a male for her, I've got a very nice Gee x Ihle salmon with a lot of red (not as much as Phoenix, but close)...

Re: The benefits of rodent breeding are finally happening for us :D
It's my first year breeding my own rats too!
I've only feed a few off so far but boy was it hard lol! I haven't had to thump* a rat in a while, let alone take it away from its mom or the rest of the group with them all staring....."Wheres he going?" Ha
Man pheonix is on fire! Got a great collection going there.

Re: The benefits of rodent breeding are finally happening for us :D
smtie i felt terrible feeding off the adorable little pups, but oh well, my snakies have been staring at me wondering why they havent eaten yet phoenix is one HOT boa for sure though, she has only gotten more and more red with age and she has cleaned up a bit too i couldnt have been happier with this girl, i love my red hypos
vexal, i have at least one male here for both phoenix and milkshake, i have another in the works, just waiting for some more of those certain babies to be born the mother is gravid right now and shes absolutely AMAZING, i cannot wait to see those babies pop out talk about colorful babies, if i can get my greedy little hands on at least one little male ill be extremely happy
rayray, that is mischa, shes a 50% colombian BCC 100% het kahl she is a gorgeous girl isnt she? this is her sister from the same litter:
im thinking both of these girls are gonna be good sized adults, they are growing real quick with small meals. both of these babies go through unreal color phases, unlike any other of our other boas. they will go from an "ivory" phase, which is they have an almost white background color, then they can get pretty dark too. mischa is even more unique in that she will get dark, then turn ivory, and then little by little she is gaining a hint of gold color, and she will be in a "gold" phase for a while i love the ivory backgrounds for sure though

Re: The benefits of rodent breeding are finally happening for us :D
the rodent breeding has yet to save us any money though, but at least we have some food on the way i think im gonna have to sell feeders to a few people to break even! (i just placed what i hope to be our last frozen rat order, im hoping it holds us over until all our females start popping out babies lol) so once we euthanize enough rats to last our own snakes a while we will be selling any surplus so if anyone in texas wants any, be sure to let us know LOL. we are planning on setting up another rat breeding rack in march

Re: The benefits of rodent breeding are finally happening for us :D
How are you pairing your rats? As in female to male ratio? I've been swapping the males around but am having a hard time keeping track of whos been where and for how long.
A freind of mine came across a routine that sounded solid and I think I'm going to start applying it. It involves swapping the females instead of the males. Say you have a 5 tub rack. Top rack has your breeder male, the other four have 2 females in each and are labeled 1-4 top to bottom. So you take tub 1's females and put them in with the male for 2 weeks. They then go back in tub 1 and tub 2's females go in for 2 weeks, and so on. At the end of the cycle everyone takes a break for 2 weeks. Now its been 10 weeks and tub #1's females have weaned thier young and had time to put weight back on and are ready to go back in with the male. < If this proves correct that would be a possible 80 pinks every 10 weeks! I have three 5 tub racks set up right now and have been doing decent, but not that good.
So anyway I haven't tried this yet, but it sounds good to me, lol. Constant breeding and babies poppin' out. Not sure if 10 weeks is enough for them to give birth, wean their young, and fully recover to breed again. I'll have to look into that alittle more, but that would just be adding of tubs. Also not sure if a male can breed for 8 solid weeks straight.
Anyway, just thought I'd share.
