Baby Boa Rack

I just put this together today for the new babies. It's a 20 shoebox rack (Sterilite 1462, 6 qt. bins), heated with 4: flexwatt belly heat. I zig-zagged the flexwatt, so it's a single piece. I'll control the heat with a double Ranco t-stat, with the probe placed at the middle of the 3rd shelf.

Tell me what you think.

Thanks for looking.

Re: Baby Boa Rack

Very Nice. What is the shelving unit? One you bought pre fab or made?

I bought 3 pieces of 3/4"x16"x97" melamine shelving, made 6 cuts, and screwed the pieces together (while installing the flexwatt). Then, I nailed 1/4" Luan underlayment on the back. The shelves were spaced for the tubs, so they are lidless. The finishing touches are 2 little strips of melamine edge tape, and white screw caps.

Grand total for the entire rack is about $185. That's $9.25 per tub.

Re: Baby Boa Rack

it looks really good how did you get the shelves so evenly spaced out?

I built the rack upside down and used the actual tubs as spacers. I also put 6 sheets of paper on top of the tubs on the ends so that the tubs would have a little relief when the rack was finished and the paper was removed.

Simple is always good.

Re: Baby Boa Rack

ahhh, hmmm when we built our latest rack the sides were coming out crooked, we didnt use any spacers for the tubs. we ended up just measureing the height of the tubs and making these little spacer things out of wood and doing it that way

Re: Baby Boa Rack

The rack is very nicely done. I like your simple design.

I have been keeping my king snake in a rack/tub, and it has been the most efficient set up ever.
