Unexpected... but...
I was browsing on Craigslist earlier to see if I could find a 50-75gal for the boas for cheaper then at the store I shop at... well... I found an ad for a 5 1/2 ft male boa that comes with a 150gal AND a 60gal tank... So I called the guy up and apparently they don't have time to take care of him... He's living in the 150gal right now and the 60gal is just a 2nd tank they don't need... soooo... I talked to Ryan about it and we are prolly gonna be picking up the boa and tanks this weekend when we go to Austin for the reptile expo... So I'll have the big tank for the babies and well, we're gonna have a new addition as well, lol... They said he's well tempered and they handled him alot, but just don't have time for him anymore -_- So... for $120 we get the boa and both tanks... good deal if u ask me... I just hope they were taking care of him and he's not mal-nourished I guess we shall see... Any advice if he turns into a rescue boa? Pics to come when we get him!

for those big of tanks, thats freaikin awesome if you dont use them yourself for fish or whatever, you can get a pretty decent chunk of change if you resell them

Re: Unexpected... but...
Sounds good if it is true. One thing though, people don't know tank sizes. Sooo many people come in to my job saying they have a 100 gallon, 200 gallon, etc. and they turn out to be 55s. So definitely get the dimensions first since the price is so low. But if it is what they say, then congrats!

Ok, I guess you are bent on cohabitating your snakes. At least keep them separate during the quarantine period.

Re: Unexpected... but...
I will.... I do want to get a couple of the boaphile enclosures so I can keep the snakes in individual areas, but i don't have the cash to dish out for 3 boaphiles right now I deff. will before he reaches maturity... Don't want to keep them together then...

Re: Unexpected... but...
Ey yi yi. You are already keeping some of them together? And you are getting another one? For $120 you could get cages/tubs to get your CURRENT collection seperated.
.
I have a motto: If you don't have the money or space to seperate your reptiles, then don't get them.
.
Sorry to be so blunt, but what you are doing is not responsible IMO.

Re: Unexpected... but...
I do have a question though... If I were to sell the glass cages, which I will prolly end up doing soon down the road... What size boaphiles are ok for the snakes??? Like what size would u guys use for a 6ft boa? and I'd get the babies the same size since they will, of course, end up getting that size sometime in the near future...

I only have the one boa right now... I am getting another '08 baby male who I was gonna keep in cage with my '08 female until I got seperate enclosures... The big male would DEFF. NOT be in the same enclosure with the babies O_O

Re: Unexpected... but...
If they are '08's, go to walmart and get yourself some nice size storage tubs (long and wide, not tall) to keep them in. Its better for them than glass tanks anyway, and this way you can keep them seperate.
.
Just the fact that they are in the same enclosure is stressful enough to kill one of them, or both.
.
Put your new male in the big tank, and put the smaller ones in tubs till you can get boaphiles or build your own cages (which is NOT hard to do, I've done it -- anyone can). That is what I would do anyway.

Somewhere in the 6x2x2 range. Not sure on Boaphile's specifics, but that is the norm. Have you looked into AP cages? Those are good too.

Re: Unexpected... but...
4 x 2 is minimum for most boas, but they might outgrow that too. 6 x 2 should save you any worries.

Re: Unexpected... but...
You can heat the tubs with flexwatt, or if I'm not mistaken, a regulat UTH -- ON A DIMMER....you can't let it get very hot when you are dealing with plastic. Others will chime in on this or you can PM ssjsmits -- he uses tubs and his are GREAT. I'm really glad you are considering this, its in the best interest of your boas

That's so true. I've passed up many great reptiles because I couldn't provided proper housing.

In fact, ssjsmits could probably tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about tubs. Seriously. Check in with him, and your boas will be some happy campers

Re: Unexpected... but...
oh yea... I know they will get huuuuge... haha... I've actually been reading the tutorial on building your own cages and I know that me and the guys could easily build some nice big boaphile style cages within a month
and my buddy just told me he has a bunch of big tubs at his house so looks like I'll be set and just be able to sell the big tanks once I get to making some enclosures
I really appreciate the advice guys ^-^

Re: Unexpected... but...
Whatever you decide to heat with - getting a good Thermostat is essential . Dimmer switches don't account for changes in the room temperatures and you'll always be needing to adjusting it - hassle. Thermostats do all of the work for you . If you can't afford the pricey ones, then get a pair of cheapo Thermostats and plug one into the other (setting it 5 degrees higher), and it'll act as a safety back-up in case of a malfunction. Two good sources of heating are Flex-watt, and radient heat panels - depending on cage sizes , structure, materials used, and room temps. Heat lamps and screen tops are better used for other animals - IMO

Agreed. Dimmers suck due to the adjusting factor. Here in south Texas with the constant large fluctuations of temps, even our indoor temps fluctuate greatly. Im constantly keeping an eye on my temps and making small adjustments. The small adjustments keep the temps proper but is is a hassle. My new T-stat should be on its though. I went with the generally recommended Herpstat. Im so ready for my boa to grow a bit more so I can finally order his AP cage and get him out of the aquarium style tank.

Re: Unexpected... but...
IMHO, glass tanks--especially that big--are a pain. I have a 75 gallon now and have a 150 watt CHE and a UTH. Together, they dry out the enclosure and suck up the electricity! I can't even imagine a 150 gallon tank. They are also very heavy and hard to move, and they don't stack. I would recommend saving up for Boaphiles or Animal Plastics or something similar. In the long run they will be cheaper because they hold heat better, and you can get away with only one source of heat.
