I knew I shouldn't have!
I knew I shouldn't have fed Chance in his cage.now he is sitting at the spot I fed him and looks at every movement he see's.He acts like he is still hungry.I need to #1. feed his again? (fed him sunday) or #2. try somehow to get him bigger prey for Sunday's feeding. (for where? I have to drive about 1 hour away to get to a pet shop)
what do you suggest?

Re: I knew I shouldn't have!
Will he eat f/t? My suggestion would be for you to buy a few months worth of food and then freeze what he doesn't eat. You could buy in bulk but he's going to grow alot, and it would be pointless for just one snake. If you haven't tried feeding f/t, then I would recommend it.
Feed him according to his normal schedule, but if he's under a year old, you can feed him every 5-6 days, if his meals are small. If you give him a bigger prey item, then feed him every week. And just feed him outside the enclosure from now on.
Do you know how to measure a prey item? Get the largest width of his girth and compare that to a prey item of the same size/girth.

Re: I knew I shouldn't have!
Yeah, I'd buy a few bags of like 2 or 3 different sizes from one of the several online suppliers and keep them all in the freezer. I'd also stick to the normal feeding schedule and make sure you're feeding an appropriately sized prey item.

Re: I knew I shouldn't have!
Chance needs to be hook trained. Whenever you want to take him out of the cage use a snake hook (clothes hangers, paper towel rows also work) to gently pat him on his head area to let him know that he is not about to be fed. When it is feeding time do not use the hook, they quickly realize the hook routine.

Re: I knew I shouldn't have!
What makes you think this is from feeding in the cage? I feed 6 snakes in the cage without any problems at all, as do countless members here.
This is probably a food size/frequency issue, or a high traffic location issue, rather than a feeding in the cage issue.

Re: I knew I shouldn't have!
I feed in cage too and never had a problem. Now the cage does become no man's land for about 3 or 4 hours afterwards, but once they have a chance to calm down they don't have any problems confusing the cage opening for food being offered. Hook training (like Boaterr said) isn't a bad idea though, if you think it would make you feel more at ease.

I am thinking this is the problem because.what do u mean by size/frequency?
according to 1 pet shop,I was feeding him rat pups. But I now think they are rat pinkies (I have a few months worth too).I'll have to find the link to the pictures I found of all size of rats & mice and their correct "name"
#1. he usually doesnt act this way.
#2. Sunday was the 1st time I feed him his in cage
#3. he is in the same spot I fed him at,which is not his normal "hang out" spots
#4.usually he doesnt seem to care who or what is going on around him, but since he is in the spot i fed him he looks or turns to look every time someone walks by him
I feed f/t food, and I love the hook idea

Re: I knew I shouldn't have!
ditto what spix14 said.
snakes are opportunistic feeders, so positioning himself for food does not necessarily equate to actual need for food. (hey, snakes are like people!) Keep to a schedule of appropriately sized meals and get him into a routine (hooks are easiest) that lets him know when it's food time and when it's not.
feeding in the cage isn't a problem, you're just seeing normal snakey hopefulness
