Is This Too Cheap to be True?

i am tired of using light cans to heat my boas little bodies. in the states i had three of these exo-terra heatwave heatpads (UTH) and they worked wonderfully for me. the cheapest price usually on the internet i have seen is in the 15 dollar range for the medium 10.5"x11" that pulls 16 watts. here in costa rica, i found one at the pet store yesterday for 54 dollars! yikes!

so i get online to purchase one and have a buddy bring it to me from the states and this is the price i found.

Exo-Terra HeatWave Heat Mat - Heating & Lighting - PetSmart

7 dollars!? i ordered 3 of them. you have to read in the 'more details' to see that this mat is the medium mat that is 10.5"x11". and at the end of my online checkout, the price changed to $6.30 a piece for some odd reason.

hopefully, if any of you are looking to switch to UTH, this might be the time. my shipping for 3 of them ended up being $6.79 to florida.

Re: Is This Too Cheap to be True?

I had one of those catch on fire spontaneously on one of my tanks...and it was on a surge protector. Make sure you use a thermostat with that brand, I don't trust it at all anymore.

man...that sounds like a major malfunction! i hope everything turned out ok for you and the dweller of the tank. thank you for the heads up. myself, i never had any issues with them. the only bad thing i heard was someone melting their carpet...doofus.

a product spontaneously catching on fire should merit Exo-Terra changing their company name to "Florida 87" after the lawsuit. (kidding of course)

The 8" x 8" is the $7.00 one. On this page you can select the size and it will show you the price. Their 11" x 17" is only $9.00 however.

i see what you are talking about, but if you look closely there are some differences in the title of the product. and now, its confusing me.

the link you posted is for the 'Desert Terrarium Substrate Heater'.

the link i posted is for the basic 'HeatWave Heat Mat' and says nothing about 'Desert'. when you click on, 'more details' you see "Available in 16w, 10.5"x11" which is the medium.

when you click on 'more details' on your Desert heat pad link, they only carry small and large. there is slightly a difference in title between the two but i think i got what i ordered, which is a medium.

im sorry if that doesnt make sense very well. and correct me if i am wrong please. i want to emotionally prepare myself for the weeks of wait to get an item in central america and it be the wrong item!

Re: Is This Too Cheap to be True?

Be aware though, I saw the same price last night for those on Petsmart.com. If you pay attention to the top, sometimes it says "Free shipping for orders over $50" and then it'll change to "$75" and the site in general seemed rather glitchy. I was about to order some, but I thought that if that is a glitch, they will change it back to normal price and charge me the full price for them....

other than that, I've been using the 11"x10.5" for a few years now on the cages I've built and haven't had any problems. I trust them in that they are UL listed, unlike flexwatt.

Notice for how the "Extra Small" heatwave mat, they still want $16 for it... while the larger mats they are listed for $7.....

It just seems fishy to me.

Re: Is This Too Cheap to be True?

im switching my snakes to what i think is a much more appropriate cage, this new snake cage is already 88.5F in there, im kinda scared to add a heat source to it. if we do we will def be hooking them up to a good thermostat so i wont cook my snakes. the cages we are using are 48L x 20W x 17H, which size heat pad would be sufficient for a cage that size?
