Re: dehydration
All my Boas get hotspots of 125-130 degrees. No they don't burn, as the hotspot size is relative to the size of the Boa. But they do metabolize a whole lot quicker and are super-charged compared to Boas in other collections

Re: dehydration
I usually keep mine at 110-115F since the literature I have backs up them using this in the wild. Since boas are nocturnal, I would not recommend over 115F or they simply may not use it if other hot spots are available. Mine use the 98- 105F spots frequently and occasionally the 115F spots, they never use the 130F spot I have provided.

Re: dehydration
how do u provide so many specific hot spots. I mean the way my cage is set up there is really on one hot spot and then it just gets progressivly cooler towards the onther end. And would that high of heat not dry them out.

Isn't that bulb dangerously exposed if they were to use the top shelf?

Depends on the size of the snake. Once she got large enough she could not get around it easily I caged it off.

Re: dehydration
Ah, okay. I was just wondering about that.. especially since it would be SO hot!
There was a petstore I was in this past weekend that had bright lights attatched to the back of their rack system, protruding almost level with the substrate and long enough to touch the glass panel door.. I had a few words with the owner since most of his snakes had really bad burns and scarring.
Sad.. ):
(sorry for the hijack!)

Re: dehydration
My BCI climbs all the time. I would venture to say boas are semi arboreal. I have never seen one that would not climb if allowed out of the cage, or given a tall properly set up cage.
I like to give my reptiles choices to climb, soak, bask, hide or what ever else I can come up with; and then they do what they want, not what I assume they should do. I do not like the classifications of terrestrial, arboreal, aquatic and so on. I find many animals tend to be more than just one if given the chance.
