nother question
ok, just wanting to know. if i don't have any mineral oil around and want to "oil my snake down" to rid her of mites, how about using vegetable oil? any bad effects? veg. oil is natural so it shouldn't hurt her right? if no ill effects will it smother the mites like mineral oil?

Re: nother question
Oils and cream are silly because they will not kill all the mites, just the ones on the snake.
Go to Wal-Mart and pick up Repel Permanone, it is the best mite killing stuff you can buy. I clean my all my snakes cages once a month with Repel Permanone and I have yet to see a single mite in any of my snakes enclosures.

Re: nother question
after using that do you need to use soap and water to get it off the cage? my enclosure is wood. so i would hate for it to soak in somewhere if it is harmful.

I have 3 wood boamaster cages that I have been using it on with no problems.
Here is what I do step by step
1. Take every snake out of the room and put them in holding containers until the treatment is done.
2. Take all the waterbowls out of each cage.
3. I leave the substrate in the cages to be sprayed
4. Spray each cage until their is a fog like mist in the cage, then I close the cage and let it sit for an hour.
5. After an hour has passed I open the cage and let the cage and the room air out for an hour or until the heavy fumes have passed.
6. I wipe down the cages with fresh paper towl just to be sure that the cage is not still wet from the spray.
7. After that hour is up I put the animals and waterbowls back in their cages, the small amount of fumes still in the cage kills any mites that might have been on the snake.

.
What's the active ingredient.. Permethrin? What else? Permethrin is a common insecticide considered low-residual and low-risk.
.
That's good advice about using the right stuff and not putting goop all over a boa. The only thing I could add is that preventing mites is the way to go.. there shouldn't be a need to repeatedly treat for mites or kill mites.. if they keep coming back find out how they are getting in and eliminate that.
.
Thanks.

I can't tell if you're extremely angry or very appreciative.
Ah, the wonders and woes of caps lock.
