Might be on the big side

My BCC is at that point where weaned rats don't put lumps in her belly and the next size up is way too big.. I found something that will work but it might be a tad bigger then her width. Not double, mor like her width and 1/3.. I've fed her a mouse when she was really young and learned and 2 seconds too late that it was way too big for her, and had to problems... I really think sh can take him. In addition she now has both light and a heat pad on the hot side of the tank so digestions hould be a breeze. Help!!

Re: Might be on the big side

i have fed my snakes meals that were bigger that the biggest part of their bodies before and they never had issues. i know BCC's have more delicate digestive systems, but if it isn't alot bigger than the biggest part of her body you will be ok.

Re: Might be on the big side

Feeding a meal to large or even the proper size to often is risky practice for a bcc. The fact that this is a small bcc adds more risk.

Some boas don't have problems breaking the girth sized rule...bci seem to tolerate it well and Occidentalis can break the rule easily. Some bcc can do it as well. Can yours? Do you need to? Will a meal that is to small harm your boa? Is it worth the risk to find out?

If the boa has a regurge there is info on this site to help you get things back to normal. I've never had to put this info to the test. I do what I can to aviod this potentially fatal problem by not breaking the girth sized prey rule with bcc and not feeding to frequent.

Re: Might be on the big side

I would stick with smaller prey items, for a BCC, personally. Especially a smaller one. Girth-size or smaller would be ideal for the first year or so, you don't want to risk a regurge, it's a huge step backwards to get them to overcome it and it's just that much easier working them a little slower than you would a BCI. Stretched out feeding periods would work, as well. A 10-12 day feeding period would help, she wouldn't be overfed and just make sure she poops either between feedings, or after the second feeding at least, before trying to give her a third meal.

I hope that made sense. D: I'm about to fall asleep at the keyboard here

Re: Might be on the big side

Sorry folks, I have a BCI (all these abbreviations confuse me). The rat was a tiny bit bigger, but it made a nice noticable lump. She then burried herself in the subrate of the warm hide. The heat pad under there is very warm to the touch but not Hot. She ate that ting like a champ, and truly let me know how big she is getting. I'll post the vid l8r.

These animals are so strange. I can always tell when she is in attack mode after she eats.. When I grab her , she quickly looks back at my hand (which used to scare me) but when she flicks her tounge at my fingers she relaxes and crawls up my arms. When she got cold a few times, I put her in my shirt and lay on down watching TV, after she warms up a bit she usually rests her face on my chin and chill 4 a few hours. Freak people out when I let her get really close to my face, LOL @ 3 feet that aint a problem but at 7 I think it will be a no go.... PS I officially want a royal python.
