Heating a Cage
I'm still researching reptile cages but now have a question regarding heating. I've always gone with flex watt for belly heat, but when I get the 6x2x2 cages, I'll need something to bump the ambients up in such an enclosure. I thought a RHP would be terrific and thought I would have to couple it with cable or flex watt. Is this so?
***Do boas require belly heat or is over head heat from a RHP just as good?***
Also, regarding flex watt versus cable~ any opinions as to which might be better (longer lasting, etc.)

Re: Heating a Cage
I just use CHEs (ceramic heat emitters). Then just create a surface under it and you don't need UTH.

I agree that is the only thing that I use in my tanks and it works very well... Just set it up on a thermostat and you are set.

Re: Heating a Cage
I'd rather not use a CHE because they zap humidity so badly and where I live is already so dry; that's why I was thinking RHP.....

What do you mean "create a surface under it?" Like a nice little nesting place for her to dig through and have her way with?!

Re: Heating a Cage
Nope a hard surface the entire snake can get on and warm up on:
If they are too afraid to be in the open construct a Retes stack

Re: Heating a Cage
Huh, Retes stack; isn't that a nifty idea! Thanks for that!!
So, I was looking at the AP cage because where I live that will be the least for shipping. I was also looking to get the shelf put in for further thermoregulation and climbing stimulus. I can just ask them to put a hole in the shelf so that the RHP radiates down through that space to floor also~ can't I?

Re: Heating a Cage
I'm using both on my 2x4 AP T-10. I have an 80w RHP Reptile#$%^&Basics#$%^&Inc#$%^&::... on my Herpstat for controlling ambients and a heat cable on a rheostat for belly heat.

Re: Heating a Cage
Yep. When you are finished check them with a temp gun. Here is a big version of our retes stacks we call them shelves The holes are to be sure heat gets all the way to the bottom of the enclosure and each shelf has a different surface temperature.
TADAA:

Both snakes I have kept in here barely use the top shelf which is 110F but the others 98F, 86F and 80F they used all the time. I offer the top shelf because they do use it when th | |
