I just got a suriname red tail boa and was wondering whatyou all thought of my conditions. 4x2x2 wood cage. temp 110 under the basking light. 80 and 75 at ends of cage. Aspen shavings. I dont know humidity yet. I have heard that bcc are a little harder to care for than bci. Please give me your advice. thanks

First of all, how big is your suriname? If it is just a baby, then the 4'2'2' is too big for it. If that is all you have, then make sure you have plenty of hides available. Humidity should be around 60% to 70%. Aspen is fine for substrate. You have it TOO HOT in there!! Hot side should be around 85 to 90 degrees tops. Cool side should be 76 to 80 degrees. Yes, bcc's are a little harder to take care of. They require near perfect husbandry. Is this your first snake? Yes, they are very gorgeous, but take more time to care for. But please, turn down the heat!! If you find your snake in the "cool" side most of the time, then you have it too hot in there. Good luck!!

You believe? Have you ever even read a care sheet? Do you know what thermoregulation means? They need a gradient doug...all reptiles do.

Doug, Try moving the thermostat to one endof the cage (warm side) and just using one heat source or move both next to each other so that you can get a good gradient. I would just put a thermometer on the cool side so you can see what the gradient is. I am a little confused by heat mats on top of the cage. Seems that you would be waisting a lot of electicity as probably 80% or more of the heat is going up and into the air. Nice lookin snake though and a nice looking cage, I would just tweak it a bit
