help boa sickness?
my 3 mo old red tail has some kind of problem that the guy at the pet store said all it was was that it didnt shed around its mouth andjust soak it for an hour and help get the skin off. i did that and its jaw was still messed up and it makes a wierd sound sometimes when it breathes. it also had a little bedding in its mouth last week but we got it out quickly by some experts now it has a slightly messed up jaw and wont eat for anything. i dont know if i should take it to the vet bc it cost 50+ for a visit + medicine and if its going to die i dont want to waste my $ so if you have any idea whats going on post and ill look more at the snake to see if thats what it is

Re: help boa sickness?
Take it to the vet. You chose this animal, it didn't choose you. If you aren't willing to spend the money to take it to the vet, then give the animal to someone who will take care of it properly. Just because there is a chance of an animal dying is no reason to "not waste your $". Do you realise how long it can take an animal to die? Long enough for you to get it some help and bring it back to health.

Re: help boa sickness?
It could be a misaligned jaw, or it could be an RI.

Re: help boa sickness?
It's possible it could be mouth rot if the jaw's messed up, as you said. Look along the edge of his jaw, especially where the bedding was stuck, and check to see if there's a yellowish, cheezy-looking substance forming along his gums and the soft tissue inside his mouth.
Despite the vet being an hour or more away, if you care about your pet in the least, you'll take the drive. The closest reptile vet to me, is a good three or more hours away and I would take that trip in a heart-beat if it meant keeping my snakes healthy..
If they are a reputeable vet that's familiar with reptiles, the trip won't be a waste of time. It's the same as taking a dog in for a yearly checkup, your peace of mind is satisfied knowing your pet is healthy, and if it's sick, then you feel relieved you actually did something to save it on time, instead of going with the 'what ifs'.

Re: help boa sickness?
It still amazes me how folks can wander onto a site like this, and ask questions like,

...Honestly, unfortunately I understand that to a lot of people out there, a snake is just like a living toy, display piece, or even video game...but think twice about that...would you be saying the same thing if your dog's jaw was jacked up and whatnot, and you didn't know what it was? "oh, well if he could die, I don't wanna bother" likely (hopefully, at least) NOT. A snake is a living, breathing, and feeling creature that you took the responsibility of taking care of and keeping it's LIFE. It deserves it's best reasonable chance, I should hope.
So, if it makes you feel better, and save money, post some pics, maybe someone here will spot the problem and perfect remedy right away...then again, maybe not...so the Vet is probably the best advice....also, what temps, substrate, all that good stuff are you using? Any info helps.
