mites maybe?

it seems that in just under a year and a half i have come accross my first road block with ruby, my columbian rtb. as i put her back in her rubbermaid container today i noticed several black spots on the lid. each one, smaller than a pinhead, was a little bug. they look like an itty bitty tick(sp?). i killed as many as possible but i fear she has mites out of nowhere. can anyone confirm this?
