Identify this Boa

Hello Everyone:

My son has purchased a Redtail Boa. I had snakes years ago and to me this looks like the Common Boa. What do you think is this a Redtail. I know Redtails can come in a variety of colors.

Thanks A10

Re: Identify this Boa

Well basically
Common boa, red tail boa, columbian red tail are (I believe) all common names for that kind of boa. Although they arent actual 'True' Red tails. Your son's has a neat tail pattern. It's beautiful whether it be a Common boa or a red tail lol

Re: Identify this Boa

Thanks for all the replies;

So far that is 2 imperators, 1 common, and 1 very pretty LOL.

I was just rying to figure out if my son paid more for what he received IE: a Redtail versus others. I believe the Redtail is suppose to be the larger and more expensive. But I do not know enough to advise him. If he paid for a Redtail is the Impeator the same price?.

Thanks again everyone

Re: Identify this Boa

Redtail is generic term used by petstores and others.

Boa Contrictor Imperator and Boa Constrictor Constrictor are commonly referred to as redtails. Only BCC are true redtails.

Common boa, imperator, Colombian boa, and redtail are all used to describe what your son bought. May not be right, but that is how many describe these.

Re: Identify this Boa

SteveJor is 100% correct.

To elaborate:

If you want to be precise, the snake in your pictures is a Boa constrictor imperator of unknown origin.

It might be from Colombia, Panama, El Salvador, or any number of other places.

What it is not is a Boa constrictor constrictor. I think that when you are saying "Red Tail", you are thinking about the BCC's from Suriname, Guyana, Peru, etc. Sadly, since the term "Red Tail" is generic now, many people have started calling BCC's "True Red Tails." This, in my opinion, is every bit as misleading as calling a Colombian a "Red Tail".

Re: Identify this Boa

Thanks Everyone, GREAT SITE.

So I guess I understand, it is clear as mud lol . Would you say my son paid for something he did not get, ie: paid for a Redtail and received a Imperator. Here in Canada a Ball Python goes for around $250 a Redtail is $400-$450 I do not know what a BCC is worth versus a BCI. versus a true Redtail.

Thanks Folks
