Alright, I am not up to much on my boa genitics so here is my thing.. I have a pair of 07 salmons poss super salmons...ok first how do you know the difference between a reg salmon and a super salmon? and if you breed 2 salmons together do you make supers? is salmon a morph that you can make a het? I understand with a bunch of different morphs but didnt look to much into salmons before I got my pair..so just want the run down on the genitics on them... Thanks in advance!

Re: Salmon Questions
Of Course I have the answer... but I am old and slow.
Salmons are "co-dominant"... (well, technically they are dominant but we'll get into that in a sec.) What that means is, take everything you know about genetics and hets and reverse it.
A "Salmon" is really a het for hypo. A Super Salmon is really a homozygous hypo.
If you breed a salmon to a normal, you get approximately 50% salmons and 50% normals.
If you breed a salmon to a salmon, you get approximately 25% normals, 50% salmons, and 25% super salmons. Just like with the difference between hets for albino and normals, you cannot tell the difference just by looking at salmons vs. super salmons.
If you breed a super salmon to a normal, you get 100% salmons.
If you breed a super salmon to a salmon, you get 50% salmon and 50% super salmons.
All that make sense?

Re: Salmon Questions
Oh... and the reason why I say salmons are dominant is because you can't tell the difference between a salmon and a super. An example of a trait that actually is co-dom would be tiger retics and super tiger retics... tigers look very different than the super form of the same gene. An even better example would be mojave ball pythons. If you breed two mojos together, you get a leucistic (the super form of the same gene).

Ok I will try to help. First Salmon is not a simple ressive trait like albino or anery. It is a co-dom trait. So to throw away all the big terms basically it means that there is no het salmon, but rather that if you mate a salmon to a normal aprox half the babies will indeed be salmon. Now a super salmon means that instead of the salmon gene being co-dom it is completley dominate which means that if you mate a super to a normal aprox 100% the babies will be salmon. Supers are made from breeding 2 salmons together. But when you do this only half the babies will be supers and the others are just co-dom salmons. The problem with this being that you can not tell the two apart(some people say they can by sharp colors, they way they look, etc...). Hope I could clear some of it up for you ill stop my rant now LOL!!! | |
