Potential Problems With Other pets
I will be taking possession of a Hog Island Boa next month. I have an African Senegal parrot and a Yellow Lab. I am just wondering what I should do to avoid any problems. Obviously, the parrot and the snake will never be out together. I am more concerned about the Lab and the snake. Should I keep the Lab out of the room when I have the snake out? Any recommendations? Thanks.

Re: Potential Problems With Other pets
Well now this is just me..I never never never allow my lil taco bell dog Gi-Gi in the same room when we have one of our snakes out....Just to risky I think even with the lil snakeys....I guess I'm not willing to take the chance of a potential danger to either.....Although I dont think my taco doggie would appreciate a snake bite!

Re: Potential Problems With Other pets
I concur. We have a cat that does not get access to the snakes.

Re: Potential Problems With Other pets
same, with the cats here, mine are such idiots that they will run around the snakes head and try to play, my cat was in my room once and I had closed the door and thought the cat wasnt there, Cleo was on my bed, then suddenly WHAM the stupid cat jumps up onto the bed INCHES from Cleo, Cleo didnt strike but she started flailing, i pushed the cat off the bed and picked Cleo up, I realize now how close that could have been, Im glad Cleo didnt strike, my dog on the other hand, I dont mind being around, mainly because I know my dog and would trust him with my life pretty much, he sorta walks up and sniffs Cleo and walks away, one time, I was really watching Cleo, and she went and curled up with the dog when he was laying down, I guess she liked the heat comming from his body, I probably wouldnt trust any other dog to do that though, Also Im not worried about the dog getting eaten because he is a huge 80LB ball of hair

Re: Potential Problems With Other pets
Thanks for the responses. Here's my dilemma. My dog is not just a pet. He is a certified service animal. I am deaf and he is a hearing dog (alerts me to sounds such as smoke detector, doorbell, telephone, etc). He is very well behaved and I'd trust him around the snake. He's fine with my parrot.
If I had to I could just put him in a bedroom when the snake is out, but I'd rather no do that. Like I said, he's a service animal and he's working 24/7. He knows he has a job to do and the only way he can do that is if he has access to me. If he's locked in a bedroom and the doorbell rings, he won't be able to alert me. So, I'd rather not lock him up when the snake is out.
I guess I could just see how they do. I would never let them play together, but I'm not concerned that a Hog Island Boa is going to be able seriously injure an 80lb Lab. I'm also not concerned that my dog would hurt the snake. I'm most concerned abut stressing the snake out. But if I tell Enzo (that's my dog) to lay down in another room, he will. So, that should probably be sufficient to keep the snake calm. What do you guys think? Is the smell of the dog enough to stress out the snake? What about the smell of the parrot?

Re: Potential Problems With Other pets
As long as you supervise all their interactions 100% of the time, you will probably not have any problems.
Just be careful.

That's what I'm afraid of.
Do you need to worry about the smell of a parrot on your hands or clothes when handling a snake?
