Rabbits or Rats
hey, Cleo is eating Jumbo rats, i noticed on most websites that small rabbits are cheaper then jumbo rats but the same size, sometimes by half the price, are rabbits healthier to give a boa then rats? i work at a reptile shop and can easily get rabbits in, yet for some reason rats seem to be hard to come by, but i can still get em, so are rabbits healthier then rats?
thnx

Re: Rabbits or Rats
I can only speak from personal experience, but after switching my big female bci Oolong over to rabbits, she's seemed a lot healthier. I don't know if this is because of the rabbits, or because she's getting more exercise, but before we made the switch she was a little ehrm, "pudgy", and she's in much healthier body condition now. Her poop doesn't smell NEARLY as icky as it used to (it's still no bed of roses, mind you) and she doesn't seem to get as hungry as fast.
I am, however, a firm believer in variety with the diets of our snakes, and occasionally offer her a rat or a guinea pig, even though her diet is probably at least 85% rabbits now. Actually, we have a really good supply of all sizes of rabbits, so even our little ball pythons and our BRBs get a rabbit pink every now and again. We figure they eat a variety of things in the wild, might as well offer them a variety of things in our home, provided that variety of prey comes from a reliable, safe source.
