Ok, it's been 4 days since I got the
Suri and the Burmese Python. The Burmese is still fiesty and I'm still wearing gloves like the pansy I am. (I'm just caring for the Burm temporarily while a friend is moving to his new house and then building a cage, probably 1-2 months. Hopefully I'll get it a bit more tame by then.)
I decieded to feed them since I didn't handle them for four days, I felt they were getting used to the cages and starting to get hungry. The
suri hasn't ate for about 10 days and I see her hunting at night. I know the Burm was very hungry too.
My
Suri did the craziest thing when I fed her. She was on top of a pillow (I'll explain why I fed her on my bed later). She was alert and in feeding mode as soon as I opened the ziplock bag with the pinkie rat.
I was bringing it to her but accidently dropped it (using tongs). She actually struck while it was in mid-air and caught it, used the momentum to coil in mid-air and land on the blanket in a perfect ball coil. The pinkie dropped like, 2 feet. She caught it around 8".
It was insane. But I'm happy she has such a good feeding response, hopefully it means she won't have feeding problems!
And for the burmese, Apep (yes, the snake of chaos that fought ra), was suprisingly docile with being taken out. He didn't try to attack me, but he was very alert and tried to get out of my hands. My arms were very exposed this time so I thought I would get tagged in the arms, but he didn't take that opportunity.
Once in the tub, I tried to feed Apep a rat fuzzy. He decieded to start striking at this point, must have bit the rat 20 times. A bite and release, not a hold. It was taking such a long time and I felt he was too stressed to eat in front of me, and too cautious of me to leave himself defenseless, so I gave up on trying to watch him eat and just left the rat in there and went to pick up my brother.
I also covered the lid so it's dark. Apep taking too long is why I decieded that I'll feed my
Suri on the bed. I didn't want to switch them around and wanted Apep to get used to the container and feel a bit more comfortable with eating.
When I came back about 30 minutes later, I took a peek and the rat was halfway down. Checked again 10 minutes later, just the head left. Checked again 20 minutes later, finally settled down.
I went ahead and picked him up with my bare hands this time, bites be damned. He was suprisingly docile for the time I took him to his cage. Maybe he was just hungry. I'll find out in 3 days if he still wants to kill me!
Just thought I'd share some stories.
edit: No pictures yet. I don't want to bother them too much still, I'll take pictures on Saturday.
And Serena is doing well. Just ate a fuzzy rat a few days ago. She was slow to take it last week but today it was a instant take. So far so good with their feeding!
