Re: Right temp for UTH
it really depends on what kind of boa. what kind are we talking about here?
Put the probe ON the substrate and get a reading that way. It may be a bit off if it is on the side of the enclosure.

Re: Right temp for UTH
I keep the thermostats set at 91 here and they do fine. Thats 91 degrees +/- 1 degree under the 2-3 layers of news paper. Thats about 89-90 on top of the paper so even if they get under the newspaper, it still won't get too hot

Re: Right temp for UTH
You sent me to a care sheet to get the run around again, its says basking spot around 88 to 91. Well, I will assume I have the right temp set for my uth. I just want to know the temp of the uth ONLY! Someone has to be able to answer this, im sick of reading huge caresheets that are not answering my exact question.

Re: Right temp for UTH
What are you using for substrate? Some substrates will hold heat in. I did a test in a glass thank. I used 2" of shredded aspen and set the probe on top of it at 90. At the bottom of the aspen, it was upwards of 110 degrees in some spots!!! Thats way too hot so just be careful with that. It was that test that made my mind up, newspaper all the way

Re: Right temp for UTH
I use 1" of repti-bark, have probe on glass underneeth subst and hide. With hide over top, it reads about 91 at the glass. I assume air temp about 88 to 89 in hide.

Re: Right temp for UTH
That sounds fine then Ric. I have to have the info put a certain way as well to understand it, the way that care sheet is worded makes it hard for me to understand as well. 88-89 sounds perfect!

Re: Right temp for UTH
I use a JohnsonControls thermostat and flexwatt from MG Reptiles. My probe is inside of the enclosure (rubbermaid/sterlite 32 qt). The probe rests in the middle of the substrate (cypress mulch) -- not directly in contact with the bottom of the container. If the probe is placed on top of mulch, the temp beneath ususally gets too hot. If the probe touches the bottom of the enclosure (over the heat source), the top of the substrate may not reach the desired setting.
Bottom line, play with your set up until you find the balance you need.
