Re: Question about "True red tails" and Boa constrictors...
Basically, any animal of the subspecies Boa constrictor constrictor is a "true redtail". That is really a petshop name though... They are all boa constrictors.

Re: Question about "True red tails" and Boa constrictors...
Yes they do...
in addition to what BayArea said, the Suriname locale Red Tail is also a BCC. Check out the site below, there is GREAT info there to help you figure this out, and much easier to understand.

Re: Question about "True red tails" and Boa constrictors...
The 'True Redtail' name was given to the BCC redtails to clarify the issue in response to the pet industry naming every boa a redtail boa. I even hear people calling Argentine boas, Boa c. occidentalis "Argentine redtails". No group of boas has less of a chance of having a red tail than those.. A decade or so ago no one confused the two (BCC and BCI), much less the other subspecies. The current crop of keepers, breeders and herpers in general seem much smarter on things such as the comparative market values of certain MORPHs or phases of boas and even in many cases they know more about keeping and breeding some boas.. yet they are (mostly) less well-founded in the natural history and taxonomy of the Boa.
.
Be safe.

Re: Question about "True red tails" and Boa constrictors...
Hi RealDeal24,
Most B.C.C you see are Suriname's or Guyana's but there are a few others too. Most of your B.C.C have some widow peaks / bat wings on there saddles, kind of looks like this <) (> and they will have nicer looking tail color mostly red and sometimes orange. Suriname's tend to be more pink / red in body color and Guyana's tend to be red / purple in body color. Now B.C.I will all most never have widow peaks / bat wings on there saddles but there are a few that will have small widow peak / bat wings. There saddles will look like this ) ( most of the time. Also B.C.C will grow slower than the B.C.I but they will get bigger. Here are the scale counts for B.C.C and B.C.I. Boas.
B.C.C
scale counts - 75 to 95 dorsal rows.
227 to 250 ventrals.
49 to 62 subcaudals.
Average 15 to 21 saddles.
B.C.I
scale counts - 56 to 79 dorsal rows.
225 to 253 | |
