UTH and Melamine!
So I started building another cage and I attacthed an UTH to the bottom of the melamine and I cant feel the bottom of the tank getting any hotter.
Do these not work well with wood?
For anyone else who uses melamine what do you use to heat?
I bought the biggest one they had.
Here is the UTH I bought.
* I am going to have ANOTHER EMPTY cage. You know what that means. lol

The wood absorbs the heat. But it can be done. I dont trust putting a heating pad on the bottom of a wood tank but I guess it can be done. But it all depends on how thick your melamine is.

Its 3/4. I feel better putting it on Melamine rather than MDF or something. I am just testing it right now.

3/4 is really thick. That heating pad is going to be working hard!

Have you ever thought about putting in a light bulb? I think theres a way you can mount one inside the tank with a cage around it?

your going to wind up setting your cage/house on fire if you just stick a heatmat under a wood cage. Get your self some flexwatt install inside the cage and cover with tile board shower surround or plexiglass then caulk and put a thermostat on it and your done.

Theboaguy is right. Put the heat tape on the inside of the cage and cover it with plexiglass. At least that is how I have done mine. Works well.

but wouldn't that trap the heat of the flexwatt? isn't that dangerous?

You are suppose to leave like a 1/4" gap between the flex and the substrate(tile board) covering it. Also it cant catch fire if you have a good thermostat keeping the temp where you want it.

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but please bare with me. So you would leave a gap between the flex and the tile, then seal it?
Thanks

you got it just rip some 1/4" tall lengths of wood and make a square around the flex to make it sturdy then glue the tile board to your wood frame around the flex watt and then seal so no water can get in
