Pure Hog Island or BCI Cross?
Just wanted to get some opinions on my supposed Hog Island Boa. I paid Hog Island price for it and it was sold to me as a Hog Island, but I wouldn't be surprised if it looks more to be a cross with a BCI.
Any and all opinions are welcome and appreciated.
Thanks.

The general color, darkness and distinctness of the saddles, and amount of black in the tail make me wonder. Definately looking for an experienced Boa breeder's opinion to help me out a bit.

A pet store in my area... they claim they got it from a woman who bought it as a baby. Not sure if the woman initially bought it from the same store.

I would say it's a hogg but the only that can tell if it's a cross is the breeder. sorry not much help for me but it's a good looking snake and I would call it a hogg if that's what the store sold it to you as.

Hogs are BCI also.
Though the ones I've seen tended to be lighter than that one, I could not say one way or the other. Even in locality specific boas, you will find the odd ones. Really hard to say with out actually looking into it's background.
Nice Boa though, regardless of whether it's pure Hog, or crossed.

Thanks for the BCI clarification. I forgot that they were a BCI locale and not their own subspecies.

Reason I asked who you bought it from is, it really depends who produced it. Since it's store bought, you can't really tell if it's a cross or not.
Other then that, it's still a pretty animal.

Actually, I've read so much stuff about the differences between Island and Mainland BCI, it wouldn't surprise me if they did get reclassified down the road a ways as their own ssp.
They did it to Crotalus. I'm still messed over that.

Nobody can tell you anything for sure...crosses can take after either parent more then the other so it really is impossible to tell with complete accuracy.

At what point down the line it was crossed can also come into play. Crosses aren't always 50/50. There could have been some central american or something crossed in several generations back...who knows? For the most part though at least if not in whole, it's a Hog. They change colors btw. Hogs are probably the most noticable at having totally different colorations in the daytime from what they were at night of all the boas. They are naturally hypomelanistic and the colors change dramatically as they grow. Of course all boas do that but hogs color up nicely and improve with age IMO.

As the others have said, 100% certainty can only be attained by going there and collecting it yourself.
That having been said, I see nothing that would make me think it's not a Hogg Island. To me, crosses between hoggs and mainland tend not to be that pretty. lol

Re: Pure Hog Island or BCI Cross?
I have heard that a way to tell is if the boa has a mustache, or a really obvious one"if there is a stache, then its a villian!"...is there any truth in this?

I have found that the mustaches on boas is just another variable trait. I don't know who told you that about hogs specifically, but I can tell you that, from looking at hog island pics from some of the pickiest locality keepers on the interwebs, some hogs have mustaches too. Much like the rest of the animal, they seem to be lighter in color.

They have mustaches same as other ssp. It's just not black like most.
