There are a few sites you can look at that explain and show pictures of different boa constrictors. Riobravoreptiles.com
and boa-constrictors.com has a ton of information. Go with a well respected/trusted breeder like Gus and you can be sure that if you want a "true red tail" you're getting a true red tail.
Otherwise, you are not going to get a simple answer out of this. I promise you I've been reading about different localities, sub-species, yada-yada for years and I still hear the yada-yada part and understand even less. There is way more information for my pea brain to take in and make any sense out of.

If it's an honest dealer, you can usually tell by the price.

There's NO way to answer that. Normal's are cheaper, but still vary in price, greatly. True Red-tails are considerably more money, but again, there's no set price. Some are $300 all the way to more than $3,000....it just depends on what you want, where you get it, the bloodline...there are thousands on factors involved. Just research Gus' site and find what type of boa you want, then contact him for more info, shop around and check out other breeders, then make a decision based on your budget and needs. Good luck and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
