crazy boa!
well today i have seen something i have never seen out of any of my snakes!
today i went to feed striker everything went well untill i closed his top. he came flying out of his cool hide striking the side of his encloser 6 or 7 times really quick then he turns and bits him self! so i start to freak out and get some warm water to poor on him. he was rolling all over his encloser hanging on to him self! as soon as the warm water hit he let go of him self to strike @ the top a few times! .. whats more crazy is the hole time he is bitting him self and rolling all over his cage he picked up the rat with his tail and wraped around it a few times!
i wonder why he would do this! are my meals not big enough for him and he was hungry? last night evey time i would turn the light on i would hear "whap whap" look over there and he was fixing his jaw back!
i am kinda worried about him! he has never been this bad!

That is interesting.
How about a little info on your setup? Sorry to repeat the question if you already answered it on another thread.

Heres a pic of his cage and a few of him. His enclosure is a rubbermaid with a hide on the cool and hot side. his temps stay at 88 and 76. He was really aggressive when we first got him but he calmed down a little bit for about a month, now he seems to have lost his mind! haha

cool, well in the past I have had a snake miss a rat, catch himself then I had to help him get his teeth unstuck from his own skin, not fun dealing with a snake freaking out and thrashing.
The reason I asked about your setup is b/c excessive heat can cause neurological issue and I wanted to rule that out.
My advice would be to move this critter to a place that doesnt get a lot of traffic, that might help on claming down.

Here's the big question: Were you feeding live prey? A snake may react in a similar manner if it was bitten by the rodent.

You need to try and feed 1 rat that is the appropriate size.

Well some of the MED rats that Petco calls MED rats are not real big..I just got a SMALL rat for my 4ft boa, and when I got it home, it was an ok size, but it was a weaned RAT!!! Usually when I USED to feed live, the Small rats were MUCH larger! Plus my local frozen rat supplier's SMALL rats are too big for my 4ft boa..So I guess it could just depend on the size..
However if you feel it is necessary to feed that many that often, I would go on and bump it up to a large rat.. Might be cheaper
Your snake doesnt look overfed, if that is the one in the pic...so Im assuming the rats are really little

A solution to that is to buy in bulk from an online(or local) supplier such as rodentpro.
Pet store sizes will always vary. They just move the rats to the next size rack as they get a little bigger.
