SOmetimes you just have bad luck with breeding
Well it can't all come up roses all the time and this just proves it. The Female Albino that was brought to me pregnant gave birth today and things just didn't go too well. First off at about 60 days into her pregnancy she shed. This led me to believe that she wasn't pregnant after all and since she wasn't ever in a heat conservation position and had no swelling at all I started to feed her again. Well this went on for a month and a half and she was eating and pooping normally. So today it was of great suprise when I walked into the snake building and saw slugs strewn all over the cage. At first I thought it was poop until I got closer. Then I noticed the 4 albino babies laying there. I have no idea of the exact time of their birth, but one had obviously been squashed by the mother and another looked as though it had somehow torn loose it's yolk sack. Two others showed slight signs of life and were carefully placed in tubs in the baby rack and misted with slightly warm water to keep them hydrated.
Well the pictures that follow tell most of the story for anyone that has ever bred boas. The one in the first pictures expired about a minute after the picture was taken. The one in the second picture is still alive and is moving around a little. It may or may not make it, but I am not counting on anything right now. You will notice that it's yolk sack is still really full so it will be a long and stressful wait to see if it make it.
The last picture shows the 12 slugs and the other two premature babies that died.
I don't know if this is because of me feeding her, it being an albinoXalbino breeding or it was just by natures design. There are just too many factors to narrow it down to one thing. What I do know is that it breaks my heart when anything like this happens and innocent lives are finished before they even get a chace.
Oh yea, a word to the wise. This female was bred last year at just 2 years old and slugged out. Then bred again this year at not quite 3 years. So WAIT till your female is mature before breeding please. This girl may never be a good breeder now because of this. Only time will tell, but I guarantee that she WON'T be bred this coming season. I will give here the next year and a half off before she sees a male again.

I'm very sory to hear this. If that baby makes it what are you planing on doing with it? Probably won't be able to breed anytime soon. I just hope she enjoys her year vacation that next time she has a nice healthy clutch to make up for this bad one

Aw, the poor things... I feel bad for the mother and the babies. What exactly is a good age of maturity for female boas to begin breeding?
I'm sure a good year off will do her some good..
Do all albinoXalbino breedings end up like that or does it have to do with if the mating pair are siblings? That's sad.
Sorry to hear about that.
