My Rat!!!! (my boa Diamond Eating) DU Warning!!!
Ok I went into this earlier on another thread but I promised pics, so here are pics! Diamond is my lil boa. He likes his rats, but after he strikes if he sees any movement (ie: putting the lid on the tub) he will let go with his mouth to see whats up while staying tightly wound around his rat. In the past the only way I have been able to get him to eat if he gets distracted is to take his rat away and then give it back to him after a few minutes...
HEY! what are you doing back there?

Ok so... what was I doing?

I KNOW I left that rat around here somewhere.... anybody seen it?

OH! There it is!
Alright enough. I had to leave him alone with it after he knotted up, and thankfully he ate it... YAY! Cyall later

I think its cool how they "kill" the rats even when they are already dead...
Question...does anyone know for sure if a snake knows exactly how long to hold on to prey in order to kill it?...Sometimes my snakes hang on to F/T for several minutes...like they are just timing it to make sure its dead..LOL
I thought maybe when I was feeding live, back when, they could just tell when the animal had died..But that doesnt make sense in the F/T cases...

they can feel the pulse...they just wait for it to stop.
but with the pre killed or thawed, i would think instinct is the only thing keeping them striking, but i guess they are able to learn over the years that it is not necessary to constrict and eventually just swallow their prey, I know in the wild if they are hungry they will scavenge.

judas has held his for several minutes, and sometimes he doesn't even constrict just swallows lol it's strange , usually the warmer it is, the longer he'll constrict it seems.

Little Diamond was fed live mice before we got him, I think thats where he picked it up. Now my cali king will just approach and swallow - even tho he was fed live (pinks) before we got him. Our childrens only ever constricts if he needs to direct the food to his mouth, otherwise he doesnt even consider it, he just opens up and swallows. When he does constrict its almost begrudgingly...

That is soooo cute!
My boa Sahira held onto hers for about 35-40 minutes the last time I fed her... lol
So I went around and fed everyone else and STILL had time to sit and watch her eat it from beginning to end! LOL
