Baby Red Tail
Hello everyone. I am new to the forum. I just got a baby red tail yesterday. It is only 2 weeks old. I have had many reptiles in the past but, this is my first snake. I was wondering if there is anything that I need to be aware of with this little guy/girl?

Lots! Especially if you got any care info from a petstore. lol
Click the link in my signature. It has caresheets, links to good equipment, cage supplies, feeders and random other care info.
Welcome to the site.

What do you have questions with?
Provide us with details of your:
Temperatures (both warm and cool side)
Humidity
Hides
Substrate
Feeding
Just for the record, you should let your boa hang out in it's tank for a good week before you handle or feed it, or else it'll get stressed out.

I am not judgin, but unless it was an unblievable deal or you didnt have time to get the correct info, I think you acted irresponsibly to buy an animal before you learn how to take care of it. Snakes are a very diverse sect of animals with each species needing specific care(although many can be kept almost identical to one another).
Like i said, I'm not judging you but it was a great idea to come here to get info. These are a great group of herpers that really love these snakes.
I myself have kept reptiles without knowing how to care for them properly so I know what can happen.

Look, I have spent the last month reading up on not just boa's but many others as well. I have a fairly good idea of what I need to do to be able to care for this animal properly. I was just wondering if maybe there was anything else that I needed to know. Maybe some stuff that just isn't in any book. I guess what I was looking for was some personal experiences from you guys. I to have made the mistake of getting a new herp before I knew What was going on and I will never make that mistake again. For the record I want to thank all of you for your help and I hope that it contiues to come.

I got my boa from a pretty well local pet shop and it just so happens that the people that run the shop are also the breeders. I also have delt with them before with my other reptiles. Right now I have the temp at about 85-87 degrees, with about a 92-95 for the basking spot. At night the temp drops to around 75-80. humitity is between 55-60%. I will post some pics of my new baby. I prolly won't for a week or so. I want to give em some time to adjust. Also it looks like he/she is about to shed for the first time. The eyes are starting to look a little blue.

Your temps are a bit warm. Especially if this is a very young boa, it's going to die if you don't turn down the heat a bit. Your cool side or ambient temps are within a degree or two of what the basking area should be and you need a cool side at around 78-80. OR, maybe you have the thermometers up too close to the top of the cage and it's really not that warm down near the substrate? I hope this is the case for your snake's sake. What type thermometers and placement? Or do you use a temp gun? Any way, if these are accurate temps...too hot.

Thanks for the info. I lowered the temp and he just seems so much more active now. He had his first shed yesterday and everything went as it should. As soon as I can get my camera I will post some pics for you all to see.
