i bought a male bci last month and the breeder told me the father is eleven foot. this seems huge to me for a bci. anyone heard of one attaining such a size? btw, the one i bought was born at almost two feet if that means anything. thanks for all replies

I think that female bci's can attain b/t 9-12 feet, depending on feeding, husbandry, etc...I've heard that the avg size of a male bci is b/t 6-9 ft...but I wouldnt' say it's impossible for it to reach 11ft. Sometimes incorrect measuring methods can make false length measurements of snakes. Doesn't mean that the person is lying, but just MAYBE measured wrong and that's the length that he recorded. But, then again...I guess anything is possible, right?
Heather,
BCI stands for Boa Constrictor Imperator...which is considered a "common" boa...a BCC is the other more known boa, and that stands for Boa Constrictor Constrictor...or considered by some as the "true" redtail boa.

11 ft boas are not that unheard of especially if they are female. Here is a good caresheet link for you. Melissa Kaplan's boa care sheetAlso we have a good caresheet on this site. Red Tail Boa.net Boa caresheetAs you can see female boas max out at around 9-11ft with your occasional "Big Momma"!

Ok females in some snakes are biger than males. But to make sure it is a male or female the best thing to do is PROBING the snake.

Actually Heather, unlike mammals, female snakes tend to be larger than males and more heavily-bodied.

dont tell people to probe, that are unaware of how to probe. 11 foot males do exist, just not all that common. lori has one coming in from what i was told. probing is only to be done by experienced people. and besides...its the snakes father that was supposedly 11 feet long, this snake isnt 11 at least thats what i took from the post.

yes, the father was purported to be eleven feet, i'm thinking the genetics may predispose my month old snake to hugenss if this is true. i'll give it a few years, but i think he is going to be a big boy by his birth length of almost 24'' and the fact that he's already eating adult mice. time will tell......later.

Eh.. I wouldn't rely now on any information as to what the adult size of your boa will be. I have a 6 year old female that is only 4 1/2'er and her parents were large adults even.
In the bCi's both male and females can attain a HUGE size. Usually it is the female that is most likely to though. Here's a couple of my larger ones ..
This is DIAMOND my female that is HUGE. She's 10'+
The lil flashie thing is a lighter. The rat is not what she actually eats.. we had a problem getting her to feed for awhile there and tried a jumbo rat in feeding her when the pic was taken. She eats HUGE rabbits now for us hehe.
This one is NOAH..one of the males...He's 10'+ also....

Ya want to make sure he is good, strong and healthy???
Swap him to rats.
No boa, with the exception of a very small runt should be fed mouse anything.
They just aren't nutritious enough for boas.
Oh yeah, ya didn't say if he is eating dead or live, but go with fresh dead or frozen thawed.
It's healthier, parasite wise and dead can't bite back!

EDDIE is right!
Get him on frozen RATS!
He'll be a lot happier and healthier!
Rats are much more nutritious and frozen is the best!
The SOONER you switch RATS the better!

I don't have much to add to the discussion at hand except I want to thank Ophiophagus-hannah for the mention of my care sheet right next to Melissa Kaplan's sheet... I feel honored to have that sheet mentioned by someone that I really don't know that well.
Thanks!

if properly fedand maintained- i would say its definitly possible!
my adults are over 8 ft- even the males, some are 9 and 10 ft too! my largest male is a col bci who is just over 10ft.
properly fed snakes will attain great sizes!

HI ( topic change)
Lori I saw that feeder box your using at walmart only 18 bucks and its got wheels and a locking lid, I thought I would get one for the Guyana's when we need to travel for show and tell.. Its 40 plus gallons right? I need a couple in case we have a hurricaine in VA and I need to move them fast and they can hang out for a couple days. Tape a cobra mat to the outside floor,,, not bad in a pinch
If you have big snake put a couple layers of newspaper and a dozen 1/4 in holes in the lid and you can wheel them puppies to the vets or for outing's... really nice it beats the snake in da sack method,, I hates when they try and crawl on them steering wheels.whilst Iam drivin. Lori,
I see in your bottem picture that your boa has a purple tint to him. I see this in my snake also, almost a reflective color. Do all boas have this or is a certain type of RTB, thanks.
