Humidity is always something you should sort out before you get any type of reptile.

How can you not get anything above 30? I live in Utah (one of the dryest states during the winter... our humidity is literally below 20 most of the time), and I manage to hold humidity just fine. Just use some wet towels or mist down the tank.

well i thought i did have it worked out but now the house is being heated which totally messed me up and unless the humidity gauge is messed up i cant get above 35% i just put a hot towel in

also i mist 10 times a day, it dries in 5-10 minutes and humidity doesnt change just the temperature

also does anyone know a way to get a humidifier to turn on if the humidty drops to much??? or maybe exhaust fans when it gets too high?

Try covering the vents on the tank, not completely but mostly, cutting down the air circulation will hold the humidity better.

i thought i had that problem until i got a new gauge. definitely get a new one and see if your humidity is really as bad as you think...also, how do you heat the tank? i use bulbs and hold it fine, but i live in South Carolina. bulbs will dry the cage out faster than UTH. also, if you can lower temps and still keep it in a safe range for your snake, that will help.

ya i use a 100 watt infrared on the hot side and incandescent/ 50 watt moon glo on the other side

i covered all my vents and the only opening is an inch around my light fixture

i keep the temps around 88-90 on hot side and depending how hot my room gets the cold side goes from 83-87

don't cut ventilation to increase humidity, what housing are u using aquariam or wood/plastic viv. have u tried a large water bowl directly above/below the heat source. if u do try this method provide a small bowl for drinking at the cool end. really u want a minimum of 40 % preferably a little higher, but during the shed cycle it will need to be around 70%. especially when they get 4 foot plus. also increase the ventilation u cant rely on fresh air circulating the tank through a 1 inch hole. you need vent at either end, one higher on the hot end and one lower at the cool end. size depending on the size of tank.

dude 100 watts?....try putting the cool side at about 80, and always make sure your hot side doesnt get abot 87 or 88 or so...100 watts is probably your problem, see what you can do with UTH or 75 watts.

If your guage doesn't move after misting the cage, your guage is probably stuck. While analog guages provide the most accurate reading, digital is far more reliable. You can get digital hydrometer/thermometer combos from radioshack for reasonably cheap.

If you still can't keep humidity right, a warm air humidifier will work fine. You pipe the humid air into the cage. By the time it gets there, the warm mist is cool. If you want to drop a pretty large sum of money, you can get a humidistat to control the humidity level within +\- 5-8% by turning on\off a humidifier based off a relative humidity reading. You can click the link in my sig for more information on both.

Good luck.

If you run those 100-watt bulbs at full capacity I'm surprised you're not cooking him. I run a 100-watt but I have it on a dimmer switch, and probably run it from 60-70%. Oh, and by the way you should only heat one side. The cool side shouldn't have anything heating it at all. That side should be around 78-80 at the most. I'm looking at mine right now and it's at 81, but it's only raised a couple degrees to help him digest.
Are you sure your humidity monitor is even working? If you put a damp towel next to any humidity measuring device, you'd have to be in the middle of the Sahara desert for it to not move. When I put a towel over my tank, it goes from 55 to maybe 70 in about 2 minutes. Even if it's room-based humidity it goes from like 25 to 70 in about 3 minutes. You should suspect something if you mist the tank and the meter doesn't move. Those things are incredibly sensitive... that is, if they work.
Get a new meter.
