feeding question,,for those with adult boas

My boa is still small, around 4 and 1/2 ft. My question is what do you feed an adult boa, assuming adult is around 3yrs old? Do you just feed large rats or small rabbits or what, how many and how often?

Just like to start planning now.I cant always get into town to buy anything so having a stocked freezer is a must.Anyway Im just wondering if I should start considering breeding my own rabbits, I used to do it and still have the cages, just wondering if its really needful. BTW I hate raising rats I get too attached to them and prefer to buy frozens..

I feed mine anywhere from once a week to once every 3 weeks depending on how he's acting, sheds, etc. He's close to 8' and about 5 years old. I feed him the biggest rats I can get, currently "colossal rats" from Rodent Pro.

I wouldn't go to the hassle of breeding mammals unless I had a large collection. Currently this is the only big guy I have so its not worth either the hassle or getting overrun with prey item mammals for me.

your boa at an adult age, generally needs to be fed every 14days (2weeks). this may change, as you may find that he/she gets fat from that much food, or maybe even too skinny. my boas are both on lg rats every 2wks. rather or not it has to eat rabbits really depends. males wont. females might. breeding rabbits for one snake like that would probly amount to the same costs as just buying frozen. plus i believe a BCI wont get past 5lb bunnys anyways, which are $5/rabbit i believe at rodentpro. if you have a male, you will probly not need more then a colossal rats.

2 colossals? I've been giving my guy one and he's far from thin. I never figured he would eat 2, maybe I'll try next time.

Personally, I will not feed any boa over about 2 pounds of food at a time.

The only problem with GPs is that they are very high in fat with large bones, not much meat, and alot more hair than most feeders. I have used them on occasion, like you, but never as a staple.

I agree on the varying schedule completely. I don't see anything in that post that addresses item size though. Is 2 pounds just the number you feel is best?

I don't know how much these colossal rats weigh, I'm guessing about a pound, maybe a bit more. How many grams in a pound??
