what would be best?
i am going to get a snake for my birthday and i cant exactly decide what to get. I want something that will not get over 8 foot and will not cost a lot of money. I have had many snakes before but then i had an entire room for the snakes cages. I still have plenty of room but i dont want to take up too much space. if you have any suggestions i would appreciate it

How 'bout a Cali Kingsnake. Easy to care for. Cool pattern. Not too big. Easy feeders. Reluctant to bite. You can put your extra money into a nice cage for the snake. I also like Gray Banded Ratsnakes, which are a little more expensive. I'm also partial to Sinaloan Milksnakes.
I don't like Ball Pythons 'cause some are difficult feeders.

i am not much of a fan of ball pythons, either.
BUT... if you get one from someone that breeds them, and it is already eating f/t, and you don't handle it much, you should be ok.

I'm not sure what your price range is, but I'd suggest one of the smaller carpet pythons. Obviously I'm partial to them =), but they are light bodied, fairly even tempered, pretty, and way more active than a ball python or boa (though I have Hogs too, and they're also nice snakes). Jungles top out right around your 8ft limit, but irian jayas top out a little smaller. You should be able to find a jungle or irian jaya carpet for around $150ish.

Check out Hogg Island boas. They rarely exceed 6 feet.

What about a male bci, they dont get too big. I selected on poll a breeder, though I have nothing against petstores, friends are a great place to get reps from or other, I had to choose one so went for breeder as I thought you'd get good advice while there and also have a chance (maybe) to see mom and dad.
