Climbing boas?
Thought I would ask if anybody else has a boa that loves to climb and perch. Shiva loves his 'ornament' and frequently perches on it for periods of time. Is this something he will outgrow as he gets older - or should I take this into consideration when building his adult enclosure? Of course that won't be for a while yet. hehe He seems to be an all-around type of fellow . . . he also loves to burrow and then we play 'hide-n-seek'. lol

They will continue to like to climb if you offer a large enough branch for them to do so. Most people dont though because the floor space is needed more then height unless your only keeping the one then its ok.

Floppy loves to climb on his branch, as well, and I think when you look up boas it says there semi aboreal, meaning they spend time on the ground and in trees! As Boa Enthusiast said most people dont offer them the oppertunity to climb! and keep them in a viv 2ft high.

If you only plan on keeping 1 then go for some height as well but if you plan to breed, its best to build or buy 2ft high enclosures. Space efficiency is what breeders look for!

Hmmm . . . I know the males don't grow as large as females, usually and not sure yet about breeding. He loves it so much I think he will always have a perch as well as a nice depth of shavings as he ocassionally likes to burrow. I had not expected BPs to climb - but my daughters does . . . so thanks, Louise, for confirming it they also enjoy a perch. I will consider that when designing El Cajon's new home.

Ya, make it sturdy and what I would do is make a wooden circle and put it to the outside of the cage and put the thick wooden branch where the circle is on the inside and take some long screws and screw them through the circle, the cage wall and into the branch. If it is wide enough do that a couple times to make sure. Im not sure if you understood that but Im kinda in a hurry.

i think my BP has an identity crisis. his tank was next to the GTP at the petshop. i think he thinks he is a GTP. he even pulls his dead mice into the tree to eat them!

Or, he just likes to climb. Probably just the individual.

I might add that many hobbiest and breeders opt for lower height eclosures, for thier adult boas, for heating efficiency as well. The higher the enclosure is, the tougher it is to heat.
