Hello Everyone,
Thank you for the compliments. As for the questions...
We have found that our young males do fantastic. Last year was our first season breeding boas and we had two
Hypo males that we used. One was 18 months old and it was his first time breeding. The other was about three years old and a proven breeder. We bred a total of four females successfully out of six girls (each male had three girls). The younger male sired three out of four of those females. That really doesn't say anything about the males because the other two girls that did not produce babies for us just might not have been ready or we may have just caught them at the wrong time.
Anyways, the younger male bred all three of his females successfully and the litters they produced only had a few slugs (very few). I know the younger male could have bred five more females if we had them available. He fed the whole time during breeding season and did not seem to get tired at all. We bred him Monday thru Friday and seperated him from females on weekends so he could have a little bit of time to rejuvenate.
My little Jungle male seems to be just as good if not a better breeder. He is currently about 3 1/2 feet long (in the photo of him breeding, the female he is copulating with is 8 to 9 feet long) and at the beginning of this season, I didn't know how well he would do. I was hoping he would breed at least one of my females, my
Hypo female in particular. However, he not only bred her immediately, but also quite successfully since she ovulated shortly thereafter. She is going to be giving us our first litter of the season in the beginning of April. My male Jungle seems to have unlimited energy and also feeds every time we offer him food. He wants to breed, but not to the point where he'll refuse food (like male Ball Pythons do). All you have to do is seperate him from the female and he'll eat for you with no problem.
I don't really have any old males. The oldest male we have is the 3 to 4 year old male. We bred him again this season to my Ivory
Anery girl since he is
Hypo het for
Anery and he did a good job with her. I do belive that smaller males (not necessarily younger) do better than larger males. Larger males can be too rough, especially on smaller females. I think the ideal size for a breeder male Colombian Boa is around 4 to 4 1/2 feet long. We really don't have any males that are larger than this.
As for temperatures, we do offer a night time drop to cycle them and get them "in the mood". We keep the males seperate from the females and introduce them only during breeding season. The males seem to be able to tell when a female is ready and will jump right on them if he can "sense" this.
Anyways, I hope this information helps!
Thanks,
Celia
