Exotic Vet visit
I took my 2 neo RTBs to a vet last week and she gave them each a shot of Baytril and gave me one to administer 3 days later. She suggested an appt-w-a vet that visits the area 2X/mo and I just got back from seeing him. He had an intern from NC State-w-him and gave me a prescrition for Baytril every other day for two weeks. He also said to be sure the temps are up. They seem to be getting better and he sexed them (both females-one was sold to me as a male because I was told they may be a bit smaller???) and did it for free for the benefit of the intern. Now I have 0.2 BCC and 0.1 Surinam. I will look this spring for an interesting male "stud".
I'm just writing this FYI as there always seems more than one way to skin the RI cat-or varied opinions anyway. One thing he said I found interesting is that if indeed it is a bacterial infection it is NOT contagiouse and that it comes from naturally occuring bacteria (flora) every snake has but the bacteria goes on a rampage, attaching the RI and other areas when the immune system is compromised by stresses on the snake. Food for thought maybe?

Correction-0.2 BCI, 0.1 BCC. I think we should all just call them RTBs. This whole "sub species"/"morph" stuff is not my cup of tea.

lol...I think CC was just pointing out that Surinam boas are BCC...not that all BCC are Surinams. Guyanan and Surinams are the same snake. Unless you know where it was found, they can't be distinguished by scale count, color, pattern...nothing...same snake.

Suriname(formerly Dutch Guyana) is sandwitched between Guyana(formerly British Guyana) and French Guyana. They are absolutely the same snake regardless of their arbitrary political border. Many of the "Suriname Boa Constrictors" were, in fact, produced by Guyana's snake farmers, from wild caught specimens found in Guyana. When the Peoples Progressive Party came into power in Guyana, they banned the trading of wildlife. Instead of losing their livelyhoods, the farmers took their trade, as well as their animals across the Curantine River, and into Suriname, in order to resume their businesses. These Boa constrictors, meanwhile, became very popular in the states and elsewhere. By the time that Guyana re opened for trade, it had lost it's edge. Many hobbyist only wanted "Suiname Red Tail Boas". This is even somewhat the case today. These snakes do not recognize the B.S. arbitrary political borders, and are the exactly the same. The confusion seems to be due to the many varied saddle patterns and colorations that often occour in these Boas, often times within the same clutch.

Sorry about the misspelling of your moniker. Anyway I like the in depth history. I only wish I hadthe brains enough to retain it. I love details like the one you layed out regaring the Surinams. I just can't retain it. You must be a pisser at the snake shows. Something about this hobbie (like most) that attracts a certain debate oriented people. Do you dig an "interesting" exchange of conflicting information where your oponent ends up walking away shaking his head?
I had restored a high dollar muscle car and it was a top 3 in the country. I'd go to shows and listen to people critique it and just roll my eyes cause they didn't have a clue.

Wow! Do you know me or something? LOL!
Actually, I dig intervening in others #$%^$%^$%^$%^$%^$%^$%^& contests. I would rather watch both of them walk away shaking their heads.LOL!
Really though, I just can't learn enough about Boa constrictors. I'm kind of nerdy like that. When I can pass on a little information, I will. I mean, I feel like I owe it to other hobbyists that have given me a wealth of information on this and other forums. This is a great place to share information with people that have | |
